Adium+Growl= eMac freezing

I recently downloaded AdiumX for the second time (the first time, a sibling deleted it by accident). Upon setting my notifications up the way they had been, the program asked if it could install Growl.

After the program installed Growl, Adium suddenly quit working. When I tried to uninstall Growl, the entire computer froze. :( I then tried deleting all the Growl files and apps, but was told that I couldn't, since they were running.

I restarted the computer, and before opening any applications that would cause Growl to begin running, deleted all the files again and emptied my trash.

Adium is once again working wonderously, but I would really like to get my Growl notifications back.

Any ideas on what might be going wrong, and how I can fix it?

Thanks!

Have you tried downloading growl directly from growl.info and installing it that way?

I actually did try that, and as far as I could tell, it didn't install anything. :? That, and when it started freezing, I had to delete everything. I'm at work right now, away from the culprit computer, but when I get home, I'll be sure to try it. :)

I would really like to use Growl for both Adium and iChat, but if it makes my baby freeze, I'll do without.

What kind of computer, what os, how much ram?

Did Growl work some, and then stop working?

eMac, OS X.3.4 (Panther), 512mb.

Growl worked automatically with the last version of Adium that I downloaded, around February, I think. It has not worked at all with my more recent download.

Ok, I've returned back home and fixed everything. The computer hasn't frozen yet (though, granted, Adium hasn't asked to install Growl yet). I downloaded/installed Growl directly, and it seems to be working just fine.

This may need a new topic, but I seem to remember from the last version that the duck icon appeared in the middle of my screen (when Adium was in the background) to tell me I had an unread message. It no longer does that. I think this must have something to do with Growl... Anyone know? It may be that I may just need to play with it a bit.

Check that adiums built in notifications are not set to come on

All right. I've set like 10 different notifications for "recieve messages" and for "Buddy becomes available" and the duck has not appeared. I'm dumbfounded.

Am I missing an on/off switch around here somewhere??
