Is it possible to make the window disappear and just have the bubbles. The only reason i ask is because i could have sworn i saw it on another computer.

Go to your Apearance preferences and change "window style" to what you would like.

What? He said “Message Window” not “Contact List”.
Not sure this is possible; WindowShades can make windows transparent…
Or you can set the custom background to a 100% transparent PDF, GIF, or PNG.
