Adium fudges up my contact lists
Ok i am not sure if anybody has had this problem before and i tried searching the forums for something similiar but no luck. So this is the problem. I got Yahoo account, MSN and AIM account. And well after version .82 of Adium i think, problems started to appear. I tend to use meta contacts a lot, mainly because some of my friends use both AIM and MSN and so on. So what happens is that when i log on with msn messenger on my pc i get another group, called iChat (i had a group called iChat on adium) and it has got all the contacts in my msn contact list, but they are also in their normal groups. so i got double contacts. When i delete the double ones on my pc it works fine but when i do it on my mac msn messenger it deletes both contacts. the contact list in adium is also kinda foodged (i am trying to use other words than the F word ;-)) for example one user is doubled into two groups and i even if i delete that user, it appears again next time. Also when somebody logs on or anything the groups rearrange their order so for example, the "friends" list is on top and the "programmers" list is on bottom and they magically switch, friends go to the bottom and programmers go on the top.
Some time ago adium also somehow removed all my AIM contacts from my list and i had no way of recovery... So yeah, Adium has been acting weird on me. I've been considering to switch to some other software for limited time until Adium will become more stable in these matters. But it's hard to switch when everything is fooked up in my contact list.
i hope what i just said isn't hard to understand, and i hope somebody can help me.

i tried that, i am not sure if this fixed it, but it could be. But i managed to find a way to delete the "clone contacts" from my msn contact list but i need to do that one by one, i am going to use the msn messenger for some time now and iChat, and then when Adium comes out with a new version (or when i get sick and tired of iChat and MSN) or if you guys find a solution for me on this problem, i'll start using Adium again.
i find it quite sad that i need to switch to another application because i loved Adium so much.

I have the same problem, I can edit blist.xml but when I logout (msn that is) and then in again adium restores it, even if I delete a contact in adium it comes back. I also have the double contact problem. Why cant adium be like the rest and every time you logon get the contact list fresh from the server, no caching junk? I also really like it but the bugs in it are at best a little annoying.
I use gaim on my linux box, when it detects a contact list change it will prompt me as to if I want to remove the contact or put it back. I am not sure what is causing it, but, a reinstall does fix it (until you move a contact to a different group). Adium will seem to have moved the contact, it is has not! It has added it to both. It only happens to me on adium, no idea what is causing it but it is a bug.
What I can tell you is that if you delete all of your config files it does a good job of fixing it, next time it happens I will delete the files one by one to see which ones causes it.

I already said: ~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/Users/Default/libgaim/blist.xml.Freddie wrote:I use gaim on my linux box, when it detects a contact list change it will prompt me as to if I want to remove the contact or put it back. The devs recommend doing all the buddy list editing in another client and then nuking that file.
Here is the odd part, if I change the file and then log on it is recreated, but it is not recreated from getting the contact list online. If I change contact a to group b on another client, log onto adium he will still be on group a. If i edit the file save it I find that it is recreated, but with contact a still in group a (even tho I change the file and my contact list to set the contact in group b). Are the devs working on it or looking into it?

I love adium too, nothing else comes close to it. But the problem is annoying I do all of my contact list work on my windows pc which runs msn 6.2 (7 = more adds and a load of 'sad' features). It is an amazing client and if it was available for windows I would use it even with its contact list problems.

Well, you could use Gaim, which Adium is based upon; it should have no such contact list problems.Freddie wrote:I love adium too, nothing else comes close to it. It does not seem to be fixed in the newest version of adium
However, nuking the contact list now seems to work. Could the devs not add in a feature like:
onContactListEdit = nukeContactList(), refreshListFromSource();
So that when a change is made to the list the file is nuked (and closed if it is currently open) and then it is forced to refresh the contact list from the server. While it is not a huge problem for me as I have a lot of other computers which I can use to nuke contact list it is not that easy for people who do not, as they then need to get microsoft messenger for mac.

It would probably be inside the method to change the contact list in any way.
