Nope, quite the opposite actually. I connected several hours before the web site launched, and got this as a system message:

"The broken link has been fixed. Thanks for being our first users!"

Readign through their site, including the developers section, this is a multi step release. Right now they want the initial client out, and to get third parties like Adium to support not only the jabber part, but the future SIP changes they will roll into the service. They also talk quite a bit about having one IM service and talkign to anyone, aka they are working on letting this one account talk to AIM/MSN etc... The analogy they use is that there are a ton of phone companies out there, and with any one of them you can pick up a phone and dial anyone else in the world without caring who their provider is.

Google it seems is using Google Talk as a way to try and unify not only IM, but the emerging popular VoIP.

And for once, I think it might actually work. Google is getting amazingly powerful in the technology space now, and soon will have about 6 billion in cash to play with.

Now, for the conspiracy theories to start, why did Apple add Jabber to iChat and in doing so remove the AOL buddy icon with Tiger? Yes, I know Tiger Server includes a jabber server in it. I just find it interesting none the less that the out of box IM client on OS X works seamlessly day one with the Google IM service.
Actually, I got blocked. I think. I couldn’t connect anymore after using it for an hour or so :( Maybe because I used tmurayama@talk.google.com ;)

interesting possibilities

Since we all probably exchange e-mail with a fair number of gmail users, it would be interesting to have a script that trolled through our mail database and created a new Adium group of "tentative chat buddies."

Likewise something triggered by a filter in Mail.app that would take the e-mail address from new incoming mail and add it to this group if it's a gmail address. Actually, come to think of it, these could both be the same thing.

And it looks like the protocol they use is open/forthcoming. Is this Libgaim territory? Gaim-vv territory?

Also, if anyone hasn't seen it, Google has a guide to setting up Talk/Adium.

According to the latest news Google Talk will also be compatible with the Gizmo-Project. Then you can voice chat back and forth between the two.
Looking at this the plug-in that the Gizmo people were programming for Adium would be really awesome now. You could voice chat with every Gizmo, Adium and Google Talk user. Pretty sweet.

audio chat from ichat to google talk already works!

A little thing was overseen in this post. The site tuaw.com and also other sites are reporting that it IS already possible to audio chat from ichat to the google talk client.
Now I am wondering why google is stating on its website that it is only possible to text chat when other people are saying that they tested to audio chat from ichat to google talk and it actually works already. Any ideas? What is true now?

Still can't connect with Adium 0.82

I can't connect to google talk with Adium. Version 0.82

Install was fine and I can connect to Yahoo talk so the client is working okay.

I get this error:
Adium : Error
cbales@gmail.com (Jabber) : Gaim error
Authentication error

Here is my setup:
Account:
Jabber ID: cbales@gmail.com (I've also tried just cbales)
Password: (correct password - I've even changed it in gmail and tried the new one n Adium)

Personal (all blank)

Options:
Connect Server: talk.google.com (also tried talk.gmail.com)
Resource: Adium (also tried Gaim)
Port 5222
Mail: unchecked
Security - use TLS encryption (if possible) checked
Force old style SSL - unchecked
Allow plaintext Authentication - unchecked

Privacy - defaults
Proxy - defaults

I've tried turning off my firewall and that didn't seem to help.

It looks like lots of people have it working, Sadly not me.

Thanks, I saw that posting soon after posting mine. Sadly that didn't help me.

Is there a hidden server error log for Adium that might give me more useful error notification so I could know what was going on? I feel like I don't have a good clue what is going wrong.

Did you see Google's Adium setup guide yet?

Yes - That's where I got my Adium setup info...

Yup I used that - My settings agree with that, so it should work, but it doesn't work for me.

I have two Google Mail accounts - one of them is pretty recent and if I log in to Google Mail it says my account is username@googlemail.com. For this account, I had to enter username@googlemail.com in Adium to make it connect, too.

My other, older, account works with just using username@gmail.com.

Seems they have to update their documentation or make it possible for recent users to still use gmail as the account name…

From what I read, it seemed like there was going to be some kind of audio feature on here, is it there and I'm just missing it?

Google didn't mysteriously add voice chat to Adium, no. It is in Google Talk though.

Finally got it working - no change, it just works.

I tried it again a little while ago and it worked. That was with Version 0.82, then I updated to 0.84 and it still worked.

No changes to my setup - just plain setup from Google talk pages same as ever, it just started working.

Interestingly I got a message back from the Google talk team asking for more info to see if they could help me - they were guessing weird proxy settings, but I don't have any proxy set up here - like I say it just started working....

I haven't seen anyone say that iChat<->Google Talk audio chat works. TUAW doesn't even say that -- in fact, they say:
I want audio chat to work across clients. Right now, iChat to iChat audio works just as it should and as it always has with AIM and mac.com buddies. The green phone icon appears next to the buddy's name if they are audio-enabled. Click it to request permission and start speaking (assuming you have audio capabilities as well). But I want iChat to Adium audio as well. I haven't seen yet whether audio works cross platform from iChat to Google Talk for Windows or other non-Mac clients. I suspect it doesn't. For that matter, I wasn't able to chat at all with any Windows folk last night other than a lonely TabletPC user. Admittedly, my sample size is very small since most of the folks I know use Macs.

iChat -> google talk works, but only to other iChat users. In other words, you might as well just be using an AIM or .Mac account with iChat for both people.
