Google talk - what's the fuss about?

Lots of excitement over at Digg about the launch of Google Talk. It's Jabber, so Adium supports it fine. But am I missing something here? It's just another Jabber server as far as I can see, and Jabber has zillions of open servers already.

If you want to try it out, my successful settings are
Connect Server = talk.google.com
Port = 5223
Security = old style SSL (TLS did not work for me; some people report the opposite though)
Allow plain text authentication

The only reason (from my perspective) that it's important is that Jabber now has Google's budget, talent, and cool factor.

I think the coolness is greatly enhanced if you have the actual Google Talk program, then you can do voice chat and things of that nature. I'm still waiting for gaim-vv to come out and maybe help us out with this issue.
But it is google coolness, so I'll be using it too!

i was gonna create a thread to say this, but not worth it i guess.

i was really happy/proud to see Adium listed as a google compatible client:

Google = cool

Aduim + Google = cooler

I take your point, Catfish-Man. And certainly I would be very pleased to see Jabber have a higher profile in the Adium community. Perhaps one of the admins will add a Jabber ID field to our BB profiles :D

Perhaps we could keep the discussion in one thread?
