Don't think this has been discussed before but could users MSN client be shown in the tool tip in a similar way that users AIM client is? Sometimes its useful to know what version of MSN they're using especially if they won't be able to see some of the newer emotions in MSN 6. I know its possible because Mercury has this feature but not sure if its a feature of gaim.
