Bandwidth hog?

I did a comparison between the old Adium client and AdiumX and noticed that with the old client I only used about 2MB per month in bandwidth, but with AdiumX I'm closer to 8-10MB per month. I'm assuming it has something to do with the differences in protocol, but why so much overhead? Perhaps it has to do with storing the buddylist on the remote server?

Any idea why or anything that can be done to reduce it on my end? The difference in bandwidth is significant when connected over a mobile device and high data rates. :)

Thanks for any insight.

If by the old client you mean Adium 1.6, which is what it sounds like, I can safely assume you're using AIM. Therefore, the differences are many:
- Serverside buddy list
- Away message retrieval
- Buddy icon sending and receiving
- Many, many, many things which Gaim (and therefore libgaim and therefore Adium) can handle responding to which Adium 1.6 could not.

Buddy icons are probably the biggest single thing. You could perhaps hack your own libgaim which doesn't send or receive them -- I'm not sure where you'd start other than to say it'd be in oscar.c in libgaim. There's nothing we can do about it from our end, sorry.

Yeah 1.6 and AIM. Oh, and bummer!

Thanks for clarifying, I figured it was something like that. Perhaps a feature request to toggle those buddy icons? :)

Also, what ever happened to the ability to disable sound events for buddies who were in minimized groups? I'd rather only hear people signing on and off and such if the group their in is open/maximized.

Thanks again for the response.

It may have something to do with the fact that AdiumX was completely redone and bears little if any resemblance, code-wise, to Adium 1.6.

So, porting code over from the old client wasn't exactly an option. I'd totally forgotten that was a feature in the old version.
