Changing buddy icons...

How can I override a contact's buddy icon without adding them to my address book?
For people that have not chosen their own buddy icon, changing it in the user info preferences works.
However, if someone has a buddy icon, I can change it through user info for a minute or two, but then in reverts to their selected icon(i assume it auto-updates).
So is there a way to override an icon without putting the contact in my address book?
All of my buddies use AIM, if that helps.

Preferences -> Advanced => Address Book
Make sure that the "Use address book images as contacts icons" is unchecked.

What version of Adium are you using?

That didn't work, plus having it set like that doesn't allow me to use address book icons (automatically) for users that I do have in my address book.

I am having the same problem. Icons from the Address Book are always used, but attempting to assign an icon from within Adium (for people I do not want to add to my Address Book) reverts after some amount of time.
Adium .84 / OS X 10.4.2

If you do what I said earlier in this thread, it will not remove the icons that your contacts currently have, it will keep using them, and when your contacts icons change, then the icons in your contact list will change. Unchecking the Address book icons option will just make it so the addressbook won't override their current icons.

This still sounds like a bug, then. I am not /exactly/ sure what you are trying to say in your most recent post.
I *want* the Address Book to override the icons for people who are in my Address Book. If they are not in my Address Book, I want to be able to assign them in Adium.
Right now, with "Use Address Book images as contacts' icons" *checked*, I cannot assign them from within Adium.
You make it sound like (and I might just be misreading your post) I can do one or the other.
If this is not the case, and it is something I am not grasping right now based on Adium's behavior and what you are saying, then the preference "Use Address Book images as contacts' icons" needs to be re-worded to tell people what the setting actually does.
You might be saying that if I uncheck this that it will leave the ones assigned from the Address Book, but it is my guess that I will no longer be able to assign them from within the Address Book, which is not acceptable to me either.
In addition, if Adium allows me to set the icon from within Adium, the behavior should *not* be to forget about that assignment later on.

Please try the 0.85 beta (
http://beta.adiumx.com) and let us know if you still see this problem.

Tried out the latest beta. It still exhibits the broken behavior.
It looks like the contact keeps its custom Buddy Icon (set from within Adium) until the contact logs off and then logs back in again. That returns the icon to the one *they* set.
(Of course, none of this would be a problem if people would just set their buddy icons to nice simple headshots so I could keep track of everyone much easier. ..grin..)

An easy solution would be to implement a way to block incoming buddy icons from AIM, thus the custom buddy icons set in adium would not disappear.

That would be a
difficult solution, especially as compared to actually fixing a bug.
singularity: It's too late in the 0.85 cycle to look at this for 0.85, but this would be a good bug to address in 0.86. Please see
http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/ReportingBugs -- and please include a precise step-by-step reproduction of the issue in your ticket, including such observations as the one you just posted. Thanks
