I just d/led the new version of Adium ... you know, "Adium irc chat" at the bottom made it look slightly like Adium might have an irc chat client ... guess I'll just stick to epic until that happens!
LOVE the program. Fully and completely.

What? Support IRC? No. It might not ever.

I guess that does make sense thinking about it ... though I remember mIRC bringing a gazillion people into the otherwise fairly peaceful irc network to ask silly questions and say "ASL???" a thousand times, I did have it on my Windows box because it was EASIER. Difficult to think of Adium in that place -- it's higher-end. I also remember that setting up Trillian WITH the irc client somehow managed to bomb everything. I apologise for rambling ... too little sleep, and too old to not sound like an idiot without it.
Bye for now from the UK.

mIRC is a wintendo IRC client. It depends on the room and server that you connect to that varies the amount of stupid things people say like "ASL?!?!?"

Internet Relay Chat
We do not currently support IRC in Adium, nor do we intend to.
IRC is quite different from instant-messaging services. We would need to support topics, modes, and kicks, and none of this infrastructure exists in Adium.
IRC support could (theoretically) be added by a plug-in that provides the needed infrastructure and takes advantage of it. But we do not plan to write any such plug-in. It could (again, theoretically) be a third-party plug-in, but nobody's done it yet.
Gaim and IRC
It's true that Gaim supports IRC, but remember that Adium and Gaim have completely separate UI layers, and Adium has additional abstracting infrastructure between the protocol layer (libgaim) and the Cocoa UI. It's not as simple as just hooking something up to libgaim and adding some menu options.

Adium won't have IRC.

For the record ... I'd rather see Adium without an irc client anyway. As aforementioned, I think it would cause too many problems and I've enjoyed watching it grow to where it is now ... I also now remember why it's better to shut my big fat mouth and just READ the forums instead of bringing up a sore subject. Wonderful knack I have. The main reason I brought it up was that when I looked at the Adium home page, the text made me think that Adium HAD come up with an irc client separate from the chat client I know and love. Didn't seem right, but curiosity killed the cat. Instead found info on the irc channel. Would have actually hopped in ... but never quite sure if it REALLY means always friendly, as I've been around and admittedly been the irc bastard a while back. So I ended up here.
I'm going to go and read now, and let the world drift by ... shan't hear from me on the subject again.

Gaim has an IRC client biult-in, Adium uses Gaim, but Adium doesn't use the IRC protocol. It's just a good idea to refer to Trac before posting a bug, feature or something. Occasionally, people will post thier trac ticket along with a forum post.
right ...

It was a misunderstanding ... I misread the link for the irc channel as being a link to a separate irc client. That's as plain as I can put it. Goodnight.

IRC is just too different from other chat protocols; I think it would be hard to implement it into Adium without taking away a lot of the IRC functionality.

Use Colloquy if you want an Adium-ish interface.
But I still think bundling irssi with Adium would be wicked

SilverFox06 is right, according to trac.

And so what? As long as you have basic chat-functionality, I would use it..

I don't think that's a good attitude to have it all. If you're gonna do something, you should do it right. Doing something half-assed just for the sake of having it is not the mentality that has lead to a product as great as Adium.
