Hey,

I'm a long time Adium user/supporter. However, recently it has been acting rather crazy. Basically, everything makes it crash. It can't run for more than a minute. As soon as I send or recieve any message, the crash repoter comes up. Also, checking profiles/changing preferences seems to cause multitudes of crashes.

If it's related (which is probably is, I'm just not sure how), Mail has ceased working, but that's less concerning. Also, iChat doesn't work, but brand-name AIM does. iChat has the same crashes as Adium (whenever a message is sent/recieved).

In an attempt to get my precious Adium back, I did an archive and install of Tiger. Everything worked (in Mail too)! However, as soon as I did a Software Update, the same old problems returned. I'm using OS X 10.4.2, by the way.

If anyone could shine some light on this annoying problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ok, more information: trashing the old Adium preferences (as suggested by another thread) at least lets Adium run. However, Whenever text is typed, all punctuation and spaces are doubled, ex: "Test, message!" becomes "Test,, message!!" This also happens in a few other programs (Mail, MarsEdit). I have a feeling that some library that all of these use is getting wacky, but I'm not sure what to do.

It's probably either a corrupt plist that wasn't written over by the archive and install, or some other piece of software that's not standardly part of the system that you installed again after the archive and install. Unfortunately, it's hard to be more specific than that. You can try dragging ~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0 to the desktop and restarting Adium, to see if it was something in there. If the same problem happens, then you can move the folder back from your desktop so that you don't have to redo any of your settings.

That sounds like some really weird system stuff. If you're willing to, you could try backing up all of your files and doing an erase and install.

This is quite clearly not simply Adium's problem, and sounds like a fairly serious problem with all of your Cocoa apps.

I would re-install Mac OS X 10.4.2, using an Archive and Install option so that you get a fresh install (perhaps the first didn't work?), and, if necessary, an erase and install.

Since this isn't Adium related, I'm going to move it into the Need Help? forum section.

Like I said, I did the Archive and Install, and it did work. However, the Software Update caused Adium to stop working. However, I'll take you advice and do an erase and install. Thanks very much for the assistance.

When you reinstall, try installing the software updates one by one to discover the problem software update, since you are likely updating a lot of software in one swoop. That may help us get to the bottom of things (though, given that this seems to be an isolated case, perhaps not).
