RSS/Atom and IM

On a perhaps unrelated note, what would be the "best" (more reliable, least effort, most extensible) way to push RSS content via IM?
The idea would be that this program/script/module would check a feed, and if it had anything new since last check, IM those new items (appropriately formatted) to anyone on its contact list. The point isn't so much to replace a newsreader as to allow various notifications to be received. RSS/Atom is becoming the format of choice for a lot of applications/vendors to provide notifications (Netflix movie shipped out, email received, stock buy completed, etc).
