Could you open up the terminal.app and then type the following:

telnet login.oscar.aol.com 5190

and if all is ok you should see something like:

Trying 64.12.200.89...
Connected to login.glogin.messaging.aol.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
*Jg

With the last line being random jibberish. Can you confirm that you get the same?

what I get is

Trying 205.188.153.121...
telnet: connect to address 205.188.153.121: Operation timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

If you can ping 205.188.153.121, but not connect to it with the telnet test, then it would certainly indicate that there is something between your computer and the host that is blocking your access to the port.

Reading back through your posts you say this also affects a PC you tried, yet your friends in the hall can connect. At the same time you can connect through the web client of AOL Express. This would seem to indicate that the problem is not Mac specific, and is not related to your accounts.

This does not sound like a routing issue either.

You should probably check with your college friends to see if they are using a proxy.

They aren't using a proxy. I had the latest Adium also, so I decided to compile the SVN. That didn't help.

Compiling the latest version of Adium wouldn't make a difference. The problem is really independent of Adium and is affecting your computer and the PC you tried.

Were both PC and Mac tested using the same ethernet connection? Have you tried renewing your DHCP lease (network system preferences), if you are using DHCP. Have you installed a supplemental firewall on your computer?

I tried both computers on the same connection. I tried renewing my DCHP lease and it didn't help. The only firewall I use is apple's but I tried it with it off and got nowhere also.

wow, okay apparently web messenger works for msn, but not adium with the http settings  and my PC was a laptop (with gaim) that I've tried at different access points around campus, and it hasn't worked.
