GTalk won't connect

Post by xplan303ex »

I have tried to connect to google talk using Adium 0.85 and 0.86 but it won't connect. It will try to connect for a couple of minutes then it will come back with different kinds of error, most of the time is a Gaim read error. Can anyone give an idea as to what can be wrong?

(Notice that on my network - corporate - Gtalk takes about 5 minutes to log in using the official windows client)

I think the Gmail and GTalk servers may be down, I couldn't get my mail this morning, that could be the cause. How long have you not been able to connect?

I've never been able to connect.

I forgot, I am running 10.3.9 and Adium 0.86

I'm a brand new user - just discovered this program today. I have also been unable to log on with my Gtalk account. Anyone having success with this? Each time after trying a few times I am told I'm unable to connect with Gaim error.

Hmm, It's connecting fine for me. Try going into the preferences for your GTalk account, and checking the 'allow plaintext authentication' and see if it allows you to connect. If it works, go in and uncheck the plaintext option. That has solved most of my Jabber login problems... :?

I tried connecting using Jabber--which just said Connecting for way too long---so I cancelled. Then I went back to try the GTalk again...and it worked. Not sure if there is connection or just timing...but working great now.

Is your gmail account a recent one and from Germany or the UK? In that case you might have to enter googlemail instead of gmail as servername…

it's working...it's not working (Gaim error: read error)...now it's working...now won't. Perhaps there is something else going on here? I have gtalk connected on my windows machine and it doesn't go out and back up---just stays connected!

well, hum... how I got it to work for me

Post by staloysius333 »

Well, this kinda bites but I got it to work. I go through a jabber server, which connects to the gmail server for me. It works every time & I'm on line right now w/ it.

Hope this helps.

I've tried all the tips posted here, nothing works, I get the same gaim error every time. If I try through a Jabber account, it is the same.

Maybe Jabber is just blocked in my network, that would suck.

Jabber uses ports 5222, and 5223, make sure those are open on your firewall :?

And if @ work, they may have blocked it.

@ my office, they've blocked "MANY" IM ports except MS. Which really sucks! I hate MS.#$#*)#!!##

So, anyway, sorry that the info didn't help that I gave. :(

But it sounds like a port blockage now.

I just made sure that my ports are open, 5222 and 5223. Still getting the same gaim read error. Please notice that on windows the official gtalk client works and so does miranda IM.

Thanks in advance.

I'm only using port 5222

Post by staloysius333 »

Well, for what it's worth, I'm only using port 5222. OH, I'm on Mac and not windows. Maybe that's obvious but I don't think there's a Win version of Adium.

I'm also using MOS 10.4.3, I'm using a cable modem from Media Com and an Apple Airport.

Hum.... what jabber service are you using? Mine is jabber.3gnt.org

I'm using a Jabber Id of: asaucier333@gmail.com as denoted w/in Adium.

Any help?

Still not connecting, but I thought you had to use talk.google.com for google talk?

Can I just use any jabber server?

I'm able to use a jabber connectoin for google...

Post by staloysius333 »

It does not appear that I have to use talk.google.com. My jabber works for it. As for any jabber, nope. They've got to have a "google" connection w/in their server and you've got to sign on via that method. so, I send you the one I'm using in case you can't find one. :D

Thanks. This never worked, so I gave up using Gtalk on my mac until they release an official client for OSX.
