Hopefully a "non" standard feature request.

I'd like to have a "short" list of people who I want to block (ie people who I work with who I don't want to talk to after work, for example).
I envision a way to "mark" multiple contacts...and just temporarily block them.
I can't be the only one who wants this. Something that turns on/off via a switch...and possibly turns off automatically on startup.

alas filmgeek, this feature is inconsideration to be implemented in the next update!
how lucky we non devs are!!
edit: i dont know how it will be implemented into the UI but, if implemented you will have the choice to block or not block

Blocking will be a good feature, and adding this to it'll result in a good blocking mechanism!

I'm not talking about regular blocking.
I'm talking about a "temporary" blocking.

nobody but the devs know how the User interface will be set up. so really.. the best answer i can give you is 'you'll be able to block in the future'
if you want it to be temporary, simply take the person off of the block list... or, it might be as easy as right clicking on a name and choosing 'unblock' or 'block'.
hope we could help you

The idea has been tossed around a lot, but overall nobody has really said they want to work on it. It does sound neat.. but could be rather complex and confusing.
On a side note.. not to be rude or anything, but if you aren't sure about the answer to a topic guys.. it's possibly best not to post, or to wait until you are sure. Just a thought.

That'd be exactly how it works right now. The expansion of the interface is wide open, but as stated, that's the future. There has been a dev who not only stated they were working on it but checked in (after much work) a working implementation that currently exists in the SVN, that being Colin. It's not publicly available and has not been officially set for a certain release AFAIK.
As to this "temporary" blocking versus "regular" blocking... I can't quite say I think it's good, but that's me. I'm not shooting it down for Adium or anyone else, I just don't feel it is appropriate for a couple reasons:
1) Blocking is blocking - there's no "temporary", if they are blocked, they go bye-bye from sight... don't forget if you want them back someday (and handily they aren't removed from your contact list, just offline and available for unblocking)... also, the service wouldn't and doesn't make this kind of distinction, how could we/why should we?
2) You are adding an additional layer of complexity that is unnecessary. You create 2 tiers of blocks and then users must know which to choose and how to distinguish.
3) This just seems like it could lead to all kinds of bad... it reminds me of my early days in college when "warn" was all the rage and that's how you taught your contacts a lesson - warn 'em up and laugh away. Now it'd be "don't make me temp-block you, I'll do it

"

the_tick didnt mean it like that at all, he was just stating (probably to avoid future problems) that if i didnt know the 100% correct answer to a topic post, then perhaps i should have waited for a dev to comment on the topic (which is what i should have definetly done)
i dont believe he ment any ill will towards you (or i for that matter)

I actually have two tiers (and often am using a different IM id because of this reason.
I gave my ID to work...now I'm on a bunch of buddy lists. I want to be able to be seen by my friends....
and I have to occasionally be seen by my work.
By having a "temp" block list (a list that I could just activate/deactivate) as a group...
I could be online while at work...and then when I get home...be offline to my work people and online to my friends.
Without having to change/give new IM addys.

This is an issue that will only continue to cause you problems. The solution you are giving will still not resolve it for you. I know, I had this issue too.
I ended up getting a new screen name, passing it out to my friends, and dropping old friends that I didn't talk to anymore. I also left the old screen name for coworkers/old work buddies. Worked out really well, and I didn't need a ladder blocking system..
Albeit not the solution you are hoping for, it is the best solution I have found.
Regarding my previous comments, they weren't directed to anyone in particular. No offense was meant to anyone.

I think think what filmgeek is talking about wouldn't cause too many problems. I don't think a different type of blocking system ("temporary" or whatever) is needed, just the ability to block a whole group at a time. So instead of blocking each contact individually, you, for example, right/ctrl click the group header and it gives you the option to block or unblock the entire group. In filmgeek's situation he could have his contacts arranged into coworkers and friends, so while at work he blocks the entire friends group and when he gets home, he unblocks the friends group and blocks the coworkers group.
I'm no programmer, but wouldn't it be reasonably simple (as long as you have a normal blocking system in the first place) to just tell it to send the same message to each of the contacts in a group?

i like the idea, i think i may have supported it in past forum topics. i am also interested in the possiabilty of it being implemented:).
another thing i would like to see is the ability to mute a group, so you wouldnt hear any notifications. ( i realize that this idea has been shot down in the past

I would say that getting a second account is probably your best bet guys. I hate to think what the UI would look like, I think it would end up being a confusing mess, something that should be avoided at all costs. Beauty in simplicity. If someone can think of a good, non-confusing way of doing it I'm sure that the devs would be open to it. But until then I'd hedge my bets on it not happening.

a 'block whole group' option would be an easy way to solve these problems. i don't know much programming, but the option could just tell adium to block all peeps in the group one by one... it *seems* easy...
