Because of several reasons:
(a) I might still have to chat with that person and just want to get rid of the few sentences still lingering in the upper part of my chat window
(b) I might want to show a more recent part of the conversation to someone else (of course, this only works if I clear immediately after having finished the private part of the conversation)
(c) A disappearing window can be seen from an even greater distance
Actually, I am surprised this hasn't been requested before. Have you never shifted something out of your window by typing a few lines as a precautionary measure?
(I am using Fiat Slim, a message style that allows quite a few lines to fit into my chat window – if one is using a larger message style, this is potentially less problematic.)

I'm using Candybars. Here's screenshot I've marked the menu item with a red circle (language is swedish). I noticed something when I tried with a different message style (Smooth Operator & Spotlight), after hitting 'update' I can't see anything but I can hear the send message sound. It's just a plain white window.

I think a script might do the trick...
When you write "/hide" then the scripts would add 10 blank lines.
Solves your problem, doesn't clutter the toolbar with another button, it keeps memory so you can show it...

Hmm, in my case it would be between 20 and 35 lines, depending on which monitor I am using – also, wouldn't this cause a lot of clutter the log? Nonetheless, this is a nice idea and it would be at least a temporary workaround. However, a cleaning/hiding keyboard shortcurt or toolbar icon that doesn't interfere with the chat log would be perfect.

Ah, I did not know that life could be so good!
I also want a curious-on-my-screen-looker free environment!
(That package would include an abscence of people that would ask "So, why did you hide your chat window, hmm?", of course.)

I tend to tell those people off, instead of inconveniencing myself.

/clear is a standard part of the IRC command set, so I wouldn't be surprised if we add stuff like that up if we get IRC support in the future. I wouldn't object to having it before then, but I'm not sure we'd get around to it. Lots of stuff to work on already.

I don't mind waiting for a while, not too much of a big problem, but yea.. just something that'd be nice to have.

e.g. possibly a corrupted preference file?
Ok I didn't quite go thru with my usual way of tracking down problems with programs (namely removing/adding one file at a time and seeing if the problem reoccurs – oldest trick in the book), but as i mentioned in sum other threads, i've recently got a powerbook g3 pdq, and i put adium on it just this morning, directly copying the Adium app folder, Adium 2.0 app support folder, and the two adium pref files (one for adium one for the crash reporter) from my usual comp into their respective places on the pdq. The contact list click-thru problem's gone, as far as i can see.
My usual comp (an iMac DV) runs tiger 10.4.2, and the pdq runs Jaguar 10.2.8. Perhaps this problem was introduced in Panther? (The problem was there when the iMac had Panther on it, so I assume it started then.)

Command-N. Much faster even if you're not clicking straight through your buddy list. The only difficulty you might have is if you have multiple people with the same alias, in which case you'd have to go by their actual screen name (Or one of the screen names from their metacontact) which depending on what it is could be more of a hassle than just their name (Or a letter or two of their name, rather)

Well, I've just altered that - just found it too...

and I changed my message style to minimal - that acutally got rid of the "boxes" from around the text...
I was - and have found w/ the minimal look - looking for a way to see the pic underneath the words more clearly that I am displaying for my background.
I do believe a "clear" button or really a right click->clear would be nice & I"ll be happy to put in a request for this feature but I know what it's like to develop an app and then have to mod it every day! I'm doing it now.... bummer. So, what I've found works for me but I'll be glad to add it as a request if it will help others.
Thanks so much!
