Clearing the Chat window. How?

Hi, I've searched the "bugs/features" requests on this & can't tell if it's been implemented. Has it? If so, woudl someone be so kind as to tell me where the button is to do it?
Thanks so much....

You can also try a search of the changesets if you can't find it in the tickets. But I honestly don't remember it being implemented. Have you filed a ticket for it? If you haven't it probably won't get done

Before someone says "close the chat window and open it again", I'll point out that opening a chat window is quite annoying.. especially if the contactlist keeps passing your mouse clicks to the app under it (not sure if anyone's filed a ticket for this; going to search for it after I post)...
It'd be nice to have a button to jz clear the chat window for you. For MacMessenger it's a button called Flush, and it speeds up the chat window redraws quite a lot, especially if you've been chatting all day.

Why is this needed?

No idea. Slow comp? Smooth-scrolling enabled message style?

Sorry my post was a bit bunched up.
When you've been chatting a lot, the chat window gets filled up, and without it being cleared somehow, chat window refreshes take a long long time (in the range of 10-30 secs per change). This causes hangs for just about every change made to the chat content area, such as when a new message comes in, your message goes out, you scroll through the messages, move the window, cause the window typing area to change size, even just bringing the window back to focus. It really gets annoying.
Now you could say: "Just close and reopen the chat window!", but I think there's a bug in the contact list that sometimes (actually more often than not) passes mouse clicks to the app below it, so sometimes if you close the chat window, it takes some time to get it open again. I think I filed that as a bug about a year ago, but it probably got lost in the Realm of the Forgotten Bugs...
That's my reason anyway, not sure what staloysius333's reason is.

So shouldn't we fix that instead of putting in a hack to get around it?

Well if you're closing a chat window purely just to reopen it because you want the content area cleared, shouldn't there be a button that just clears the content area and save all that trouble?
I agree that the contact list needs to be fixed, but that's a consequential problem to this one. You shouldn't have to reopen a chat window just to clear the contents anyway.
EDIT: Sorry Tick, what problem are you referring to? Slow comps or contact list?

Uhm, when I right click (ctrl-click) in the chatwindow and at the top of the menu I got Update. If I hit that the chatwindow will be cleared.

Whereabouts in the chat window are you right-clicking? I don't seem to be able to find it. Also what version Adium are you using?

I can't seem to find "update" by right-clicking in the message window either. What message style are you using?

Tick means fix the fact that Webkit slows down with hojillions of messages.
I honestly don't think it's necessary to implement. Closing and re-opening the chat window is a good solution, and if there's a bug preventing you from doing this, let's fix it.
What is the opactiy setting of your contac list?

Also, how many messages do you have set for the message history?

I would also like this feature as a privacy enhancement. Right now, I have to write several lines of nonsense to move potentially embarassing stuff out of view. A keyboard shortcut for clearing the window's contents would really be a good feature. At least for people that are chatting in offices, dorms, shared apartments, on campus and so on and so forth. I would use such a feature quite often.
(Now, does this tell more about me or about my roommate

)

cbarrett:
Um.. contact list opacity is 70% but this bug still happens if it's at 100%; i've tried it a long time ago.
Tick:
And I don't use message history.
ozean:
Yea I'd like that idea too. Hiding doesn't quite work if you want to keep chatting...

Do you still get this if you move the Adium 2.0 folder out of "~/Library/Application Support"?
e.g. possibly a corrupted preference file?
