Message too long...

I know that in Trillan (gets slapped for referencing Trillan) posts that are too long to be sent are automatically broken up into multiple posts and sent. Any hope of this appearing in Adium?

That would be fun!

One worry about that -- what if you send a REALLY long message, and then get rate-limited because the broken-up messages send too fast? We have no way of knowing your rate limit, so that could cause some trouble...

What's the current behaviour? The last part of the message gets lost?

I'm not sure this is actually worth doing. How many times has anybody ever sent a message that was too long? Call me lame but I don't think I've ever sent a message too long. Let alone enough to warrant having this script built in. If its the case your message is too long just highlight half of it hit cmd+x and send the first half; then just paste the second. I don't see what's so hard about doing that.

But hey, if the devs want to incorporate this then by all means. I just don't think it would be all that useful overall.

How about adding the ability to break down text into segments that just meet the maximum text length and then auto-sending them.

dchoby98 just told you why, three posts up:

Does the official AIM client have a way of knowing? I know it has that colorful meter. Is this information available to third-party clients?

It's easy to go over the character limit if you're copy-pasting something interesting for the other person to read.

Also, no answer to my question about 5 posts up? Maybe it sounds stupid, but I know for a fact I've sent messages longer than MSN for Mac would allow, without any kind of warning. Did the last part get lost, or what?

Part of the problem of breaking messages up/determining rates/etc. is the fact that any styling adds HTML, which doesn't get added until sent and can't be counted easily that way. And if you break a message up the style/color tags have to be counted against each chunk, since it will need to send for each message segment. Not to mention you'd need to check for malformed/dangling tags, such as if a message got split in the middle of an italic, you'd need to close, reopen, and close that tag again properly in each message chunk. That's a lot of work & overhead...

isnt there a function for this already in OS X?

apple + C and apple + V ?

just use another app to store your horrendous message... or maybe even segment it in a message window?

tis what i do

From what I can tell, it just doesn't send the message at all.

There's always more to these things than meets the eye. Fair enough.

I wonder why the official Mac MSN client limits how much you can send, then? Weird indeed.
