Can I download a plug-in or the like for Adium so that I may view the custom emoticons that my contacts use?

No. I'm sure this has been mentioned before, a search on the forums will give you complete answers as to why.

This is one of the things that is new in libgaim2. It'll happen eventually, but it's not terribly high on the priority list.
