If GTalk voice chat makes its way into Adium, I may weep with happiness.

Let's not run with scissors yet :)

The provided API makes available other functionality [for example, a P2P stack, which I think could be interesting], although GTalk voice is present. To add that to Adium would require not only getting this to compile & run on OS X, but also adding input support (microphone anybody?) and then a sharp interface, likely including level indicators and whatnot (as well as rings, menu items, some type of event logging to at least indicate you had a conversation [audio] with someone, etc. .) That's some serious time investment...

Oh, I know. I'm not expecting to happen anytime soon, or even at all. It was just a pleasant thought. :D

Right now, I'd settle for an official OS X GTalk client. Even a beta one.

Every Mac laptop given to Google folks has Adium preinstalled... why make an official client when you've got Adium and open standards? :)

Maybe a question to ask, is whether anyone has seen any voice/video chat applications with a usable interface that they like? It might help serve as a reference point for anyone wanting to spend the time adding this support to Adium.

Note that since at this point in time it is not considered a high priority by the Adium development team, partly because of other priorities and lack of expertise in that area, anyone wanting to provide a prototype of that functionality would be welcomed - by me at any rate.

Current applications that provide voice chat support, and might serve as reference, on the Mac include Gizmo, Skype and iChat. If there are others I am not aware of them. Note that Gizmo already has some sort of Adium integration in the form of a plug-in available from the Adium Xtras page.

For an initial version to get the ball rolling, something that would simply allow initiating a voice connection would be nice. Video would be added after voice, and to make life easier I believe simply supporting a DV camera to start with would make sense, since Quicktime already provides support for that.

I was just reading this on the Google Talk blog:
1. Voice calls between other PC IM/VOIP clients such as Gaim, Adium, Psi, etc. and Google Talk.
Since we launched the beta of Google Talk in August, many users (especially those using Linux and Mac) have been connecting to the service using one of many 3rd party clients. However, up to now, these clients have only been able to send and receive IMs, but not make voice calls. With the release of Libjingle, the makers of these clients will be able to add the ability to make and receive calls between their clients and Google Talk. In fact, they'll be able to support calls between their clients and ANY OTHER clients that support Libjingle .
From what that says, it sounds like it would be pretty simple to integrate this Libljingle thingy into Adium... (although, It also might not be...)

Yes, it would be extremely difficult to use this libjingle; we don’t have an interface that exists for this…
