garbled russian characters from other folk's ICQ

So my Russian girlfriend has friends who use ICQ back in Russia...with both the "real" Mac ICQ client and Adium, the Russian characters are often garbled. I know this isn't purely an Adium issue, but I wonder if people have encountered the issue before and if there is any kind of fix possilbe...preferably on her end, but possibly on the friends (I'm not sire what ICQ client they're using...)

Go to Preferences -> Accouts -> <ICQ account> -> Options -> Encoding and change the encoding.
