There is a way to over-ride text, but it over-rides your text as well.

Preferences -> Messages

There is a section there for 'Text Display'. There you can set what fonts display during messages.

In general, patience is a virtue (less than 12 hours is not a sufficiently long enough period of time to justify the above.) If impatience gets the better of you, try a search of the forums. Otherwise, someone (if they have the answer) will post when they see this thread (or another other thread they have a response to.) Also, full words instead of massive abbreviations are greatly appreciated (as I for one would rather interpret code rather than forum postings)

I have encountered the same problems as XM8. The preferences say that message colors are ignored, but I still get messages in white, etc. (The other person's supposedly dark background color doesn't show). I am using Fiat(Slim) on Tiger 10.4.3.

Does anyone else experience this problem? I'd only like to file a trac ticket if others are experiencing it as well... basically, Adium always respects incoming message font colors despite the preference box to show them being unchecked.

I see the colour I want just fine. Maybe it’s because the message style specifies a colour already.
