What don't Work in Adium (evry release including 0.88b1)
Hi !!!
i Love adium very nice messenger, multi-protocol etc...
BUT something don't work and i think it's easy to repaire :
- in MSN : avatar aren't refresh when a contact change his picture.
- in MSN : showing personnal message (like status).
- in evry protocol : limite smiley by protocol. for exemple in yahoo (l) don't work and in MSN :)) don't work.
- i have read many things about libgaim2 and i have readed with libgaim2 audio and webcam work on yahoo and msn.
- do you use some source code from other project like aMSN (which have webcam support) this project is under gnu/gpl !!!
good c0ding !

All of the items you've listed have been requested and/or reported already.
1. Icon refreshing - close to the oldest known bug
2. Smiley/Emoticon limiting - blocking text entry based on this doesn't make sense... what if for some reason I wanted (I) there?
3. gaim2 is not supposed to have audio and webcam support, it is simply being worked on from what I've read... and even if so, it doesn't mean it'll be quickly added. Voice/Video support is the TOP requested feature and will be the one to wait for the longest. Search for myriad threads on the whithertos and whyfores.
4. aMSN uses an entirely custom protocol stack as far as I know and integrating it would be a sizable job...

This is false, as indicated by others above.- i have read many things about libgaim2 and i have readed with libgaim2 audio and webcam work on yahoo and msn.

Yes i know adium isn't only a MSN, but MSN is ones of most used protocol !!! and when users see aMSN or Mercury with Audio and Webcam... they want the same in adium ! Why i using adium ? beaucoup it's beautiful, simple, userfriendly...
For LibGaim2 and Audio/Video, look on wikipedia you can read this :
A video/VoIP system is currently under production and will be included in Gaim 2.0. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libgaim
i know you work hard on adium and i encourage you.
i hope seen new adium 1.0 soon

Desires and possibilities are entirely different.
I see G5s in a tower, I want one in a laptop... never gonna happen.
I see support for X features in a certain app and I'd like them elsewhere... doesn't mean it will happen.
aMSN specifically focuses on a single protocol and does everything its own way from what I've read. Adium is multiple protocol and uses a standardized library. It's not just a matter of "copying" in what aMSN does, it's a LOT more.

And I haven't seen their webcam ticket getting updated in a while, and I read the guys blog that he apparently stopped devloping on it, and then returned. And MSN might be on of the most used protocols.. But that's in Europe mostly. theres alot of people on AIM and ICQ in the states.sonique wrote:Yes i know adium isn't only a MSN, but MSN is ones of most used protocol !!! and when users see aMSN or Mercury with Audio and Webcam... they want the same in adium ! But MSN isn't prioritized cause the developers doesn't really use it that much. And other features needs to be added first.

Please remember that wikipedia is freely editable and should never be considered a primary resource. Despite the wikipedia article's claims, it is still false to say that Gaim 2.0 will have video; this is almost certainly not the case. It is possible that voice over Google Talk will be included, though it is not yet.sonique wrote:For LibGaim2 and Audio/Video, look on wikipedia you can read this :

aMsn is built using something other than Cocoa, or even C.
In different terms. This would be like taking the engine from a Camry (the wife has a camry, I love the camry), and trying to run it in a 18 wheeler.
So the Camry is specific. I has a very smal focus. It's meant for a certain kind of person, with a certain kind of driver.
An 18 wheeler on the other hand is meant for all sorts of different things. It just does a different job, does more in some areas than the Camry, and does less in other areas.
So the engine does the heavy lifting though. If you put a engine from a 18 wheeler into a camry it would most certainly have problems, and the engine from the camry would probably burn out.
So how does this example relate to Adium using aMsn's web camera, or one project using some other project? Well, I'm not trying to say Adium is a large 18 wheeler or a Camry, Neither am I saying that aMsn is either. What I am saying is that it's just as difficult a job.
It is easier to write code than to read it. It is also quite hard to port code from a project to another one. Assumptions are always made. This isn't bad, but it's just how it is.
Adium and aMsn are also built on entirely differently technologies. Yes, they are both GPL, and they are both IM clients, but that's where the similarities stop. Just like you can't drop an engine from a crotch rocket into a f16 and hope it flies, you can't expect this to work either.
Hopefully I've made this more understandable.

Back on topic, all of those things youre asking for are cool request.. most of them have been discussed before; but you have to understand that coding is not an easy job and devs really work very hard on this project.. most of the time they can't just satisfy everyone.
If you want to help coding I'm sure it would be well recived (I guess mostly in msn... as far as I know devs don't use it as their primary IM system, so we just can't ask them to put al there efforts on it, while they could be working on something that will be usefull to them); if you don't know how to code, well just be patient like most of the rest of us and enjoy the cool things that are already available....
Most people are common with that if they change the processor or change the speed of a processor on a stationary computer they are will do the same on the portbable side.
Apple couldn't do that with the Powerbook, and there was probably alot of people wanting to have a 64 bits processor in their portable computer. But that didn't work out as they wanted too. As you can see on the PowerMacs where they have big fans and water cooling to make it so not the whole computer blows up.
And why try making a processor that would never be able to work in a PowerBook when they have been working with the intel processor for the past five years?

Before this turns into a giant and overly off-topic thread...
1. I was using an example of NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
2. CoreDuo laptops had not been spec'ed or seen until Tuesday of this past week... boy, you're right... not good enough for me having made a post about Not Going To Happen things.
3. I had almost ordered one (MacBook Pro) before I found what had been removed.
4. Let's not start a damn "this proc rox, ur proc sux" thread.
