I'll give the "bug report" first. Basically, I guess I don't go idle. But it's pretty intermittent when I have this problem. I've had people tell me that when they IM'ed me (and I was away from the computer) that I have been idle, and that I wasn't idle.

I have no idea how to tell what is stopping Adium from seeing I'm idle. The thing is, my screensaver/engery saver goes off every time and the screen doesn't come back on randomly either. I tried setting the idle autoresponce, but that has stopped from coming up too. They don't see the away message, and they don't get it as an autorepsonce.

So I figured "hey, I need to put up an away message instead". Well, I suck at that. I was wondering if there could be an option in the preferences that lets the little away message status window stay up as a regular window. So that when I don't have Adium as the main application, it won't disappear.

The last item you mention, status window control, will be in Adium 1.0.

What service(s) are you using that you're not appearing idle? Is there anything going on on your computer such as iTunes sharing, a Quicktime movie playing, etc?
