I searched the forum but could not find something related to this.

Is there a way to arrange the contact list horizontal? Or even better in rows? Could it possible be done with a Layout? Or has the code-base of adium to be changed?

You can't currently do it and I don't think it's planned anytime soon. It has been asked about before here:
