Ctrl click on the Adium application icon go to "Show Package Contents" then Contents/Resources/Service Icons/Gaim.AdiumServiceIcons replace msn.png and msn-small.png with whatever you want. msn.png should be 48x48px and msn-small 16x16px. I've been using these pictures for MSN.

msn.png
msn-small.png

I think Adium 0.8 will allow the service icons to be changed easily.

We can't use a copyrighted image.

evands but you cant reproduce it either which you are now.

The copyright is not to use or reproduce.

And if I made it as an XTRA it could avoid any legal responsibilities.

Adium .8 will support service icon packs... so you can certainly make an xtra.

I wasn't aware of that aspect of copyright law; I'm going to look into this.

It seems the little icon isnt a registered trademark.

According to the table:
Messenger Service logo : ®

And according to General Microsoft Trademark Guidelines:

Logos

Do not use the Microsoft Corporate logo, Windows logo, or any other Microsoft logos, symbols, or icons on or in connection with products, packaging, manuals, promotional/advertising materials, or Web site for any purpose except pursuant to an express written trademark license from Microsoft.

But you have to admit it looks much much better with the actual logo. You might be able to use it if you email them and ask if you can use it if you are representing microsofts services with its use.

Right. Because they are going to license competition for their servicemarks. MS is very open about that type of thing. Care to name any licensees? [especially on the Mac platform, as 3 or 4 clients support it at least]

Ok, I think we all get the fact [after 2 or 3 threads about it] you don't like the logo in Adium and want the 'real' logo. That, however, doesn't change basic business practice.

Another note: Stuffit's people wouldn't give us a license to use their product, I HIGHLY doubt MS is going to give us carte blanche with their trademarked logo.

True very true.

Well anyway, Ill create a service icon pack once 0.8 is out.

I think Lys should create an Adiumy version of each service's icon. That would be very cool. :D

Use the same ones just resize them, use the thumbnails that they have as that and it works.

But it doesnt serve a purpose actually it destroys the whole purpose of service icons,

How would u know which is msn and which is yahoo and so on?

I'm saying that there would be a unique Adiumy for each service. It would have enough of a reference to the original icon to know what service it's for.

Yeah would probably work, but youd have to be up to date on what it looks like everytime you change the adiumy.

That's not what's being suggested.

The suggestion is to create a specific duck that looks like AIM's walking dude, MSN's "penguin on crack", etc. The point isn't to dynamically match the currently set Dock icon.
