I'm not really sure what's going on here; the screenshots should show the problem though. I do, of course, have horizontal (and vertical) auto-resize turned on; the max is set to 154 px, so that's clearly not going to be a problem.
With both the "+" and the "-" group expanded:

So why does it resize so small that it can just fit "Je..." and not "Jenn"?

Yeah, because they're right-aligned.

This might be similar to the bug MBHockey reported here.

I may be wrong, but in those screen shots there doesn't seem to be anyone with a name long enough to stretch the buddy list out.

In the second shot, it says "Je..." instead of "Jenn".
