I'm not sure which services do and don't support it (most of them do, AFAIK). As for how to set it, you can just drag the picture file into the well, instead of using the image picker to select it. Also, I think the picture might have to be the right size to begin with or the animation will be lost in the resizing (might be wrong on this one).

yeah, I think I remember hearing that animated gifs had to be 48x48 OR 50x50 in order to work correctly. That *may* have gotten fixed by now though... evands would know! :D

Indeed :)

AIM officially supports GIF images; AIM images must be 50x50 or less. For various reasons, we are unable to resize GIF images within Adium, so if you set an animated image at 50x50 or less we use it directly and maintain animation, but if you set an image larger than that it is resized and becomes single-frame.

Jabber, like AIM, supports GIF images; Jabber images must be 96x96 or less, so it's as above but with a 96x96 limit beyond which the image is resized and single-frame.

MSN and Yahoo use PNG. PNG does not support animation.

And having typed all that, I remembered we have a wiki page on it.... http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/AnimatingBuddyIcons
