Adium/MSN Sign In Issue

Post by TheCreature »

Hi, new forum member here. Speaking on behalf of a group of my friends who use Adium. In previous versions, we had no problem. However, as of the last few updates... well, let's just say they're gravitating toward other instant messenger clients.
I, personally, love the duck and don't want to give it up because I'm addicted to its features (great chat logs and a great message notification on the dock - kudos to you, developers!).

Here's the most recent confounding issue:
For MSN @hotmail.com accounts, several people have been having a problem where Adium will sign you out at random intervals, completely unprovoked. I can be in the middle of a conversation, and BAM, it'll sign you out (since I have it set to always keep me signed in, it immediately signs me back in). This is quite annoying for me and for the people I'm chatting with.
Any understanding as to why this happens? The MSN server was down a few days ago, and that's when this problem started.
Microsoft Messenger for Mac doesn't do the same thing for the same account. My Google Talk account in Adium doesn't do it. It's just my @hotmail.com account, and only in Adium.

I'm running v.0.89, by the way. Is there a source for older versions - we found those to run better at times and crash less often, perhaps that might be the solution.

http://project.adiumx.com (click on Files) has links to old versions. We'd rather work with you to fix the problem, though, since it won't change otherwise.

Do you receive an error message or other indication when MSN suddenly signs you out? Does it then sign back in automatically? Under what email address are you submitting your crash reports?
The duck still burns.

Currently, it's not crashing, just signing out and then immediately back in. There is no error message (though a "failed to connect to server" message came up a few days ago when MSN was having a server problem, the thing we think may have spawned it).
There is no error message: it just disconnects, all my conversation windows show a blue bubble (I'm using the Gems status icon set) - meaning I'm offline. It then signs me back in less than a few seconds later. To those I'm chatting with, they see me disconnect and reconnect.
This happens quite frequently - at least once every seven minutes, often more.

I tried switching the connection port from 1863 to 80 (a suggestion to solve a similar problem with another messenging client, wanted to test to see if it would work). It seems it's reduced the frequency compared to my friends, but hasn't solved it.

I haven't experienced a crash since this problem started.

Nope, this occurs in two different locations for me, and several different locations for other people. Home, college, other peoples' homes, all manner of locations. Both wireless and wired do the same thing.

A sample from one of my friends having the same problem:
Heather disconnected 2:08
Heather connected 2:08
It's instantaneous, just signs out and signs back in.

It's the strangest thing, absolutely infuriating and frustrating.

Edit: strange, the post this was in reply to disappeared. However, the example still stands.

Try this last beta version of Adium 0.89: http://adiumx.cachefly.net/AdiumX_0.89b4.dmg

It'll give you obnoxious beta expired messages, and it won't fix the problem.

What it will do, however, is add an Adium Debug Window option to the Adium menu. Next time you're disconnected, open up the debug window and copy its contents, then email them to us (feedback at adiumx dot com) or post a Trac ticket (the debug window may contain your contacts' names, though it won't contain password information, so I'd recommend email ing it). It will hopefully contain more information on what is causing the disconnection.

[Starting with Adium 1.0, we'll have an official debug build available rather than having to point you to the last beta version].

Email sent.
It did it twice within what I pasted, very close to one another (about 30 seconds to a minute, if that).

Edit: just a note - it doesn't occur all at once for every single one of us. We can watch each other disconnect/reconnect, and it happens multiple times in a given conversation on both sides. Just to let you know.

How very odd...
The problem hasn't occured in about four hours of use now. Strange that it would do the same thing for three days, then suddenly stop the moment I bring it up with you.
Haha, it's like going to the doctor - if you make an appointment for a cold or flu, you're sure to get better before you get to see him!

If it does happen again, I will definitely send the debug window log - this has been a most curious problem. Thank you so much for your time (I'm aware how bogged you developers are), and I will definitely be sending the most thorough crash logs possible from now on to help improve this wonderful program. You guys are great!

I'm experiencing the same problem. Random disconnects every 10-30min or so. Adium doesn't crash, just MSN (and only MSN, problem not happening with yahoo/aim) disconnects and adium automatically reconnects right away.

aMsn is having the same issues for me, I haven't tried any of the official clients. So I'm guessing there's some kind of timeout issue occuring or the client is getting something from the server it doesn't understand and it disconnects/reconnects (just guessing, don't in fact know if aMsn uses libgaim too)

MSN keeps dropping out on Mac os X 10.4 Intel

Post by michaelgraynz »

Hi there,

MSN keeps on dropping out for me and reconnecting immediately at random intervals. This happened not only in Adium, but MSN messenger, Amsn, and various others that I have tried. As I am behind a firewall, I used port forwarding to open up the MSN port, however this does not seem to have solved the issue. This also happens regardless of whether I am on wireless or wired network.

i think this may be a bug with macs on the Msn server... it is VERY annoying, as it means that it is very hard to chat on messenger, and my signoff-signon windows popping up on other friends computers every few minutes is annoying to everyone else too!

PLEASE HELP! - if you need any more info or need me to post an error log - just contact me...
