Suppress buddy status change messages?

Hi all, time for a Really Dumb Question...
My work group uses IM as a primary communication tool, and it's not uncommon for us to leave chat windows open all day. The problem is that over time messages like this accumulate in the chat window:
Bob went idle
Bob became active
Bob went idle
Bob became active
Bob went idle
Bob became active
...well you get the idea. Short of the obvious solution of "just close your chat windows once in a while, idiot," is there a way to suppress these status change messages while preserving actual chat contents? The buddy list can serve as a means to determine who is in what status.
Is there a preference for this? Is it up to the individual message view? I'm pretty sure I'm just missing something obvious; if not, maybe I'll roll up my sleeves in Xcode...
Thanks, all!
