I appologize if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it on searching.
Is there a way to open a new message using a keyboard shortcut? I could Applescript it myself, but I can't find any menu function that opens unread messages.

CMD + N...
But this seems too simple. Maybe you're asking something different?

Close, but I meant opening newly received messages. Let's say my friend Jimbo sends me a message, can I use a keyboard shortcut to open his newly sent message? I don't want the message to automatically open because that interferes with my chatting and workflow.

Why not use Cmmd+(number of the person blinking) [like if Jimbo is the second tab, hit Cmmd+2] *bam* tab is frontmost and item(s) are read

That might work if I know who the message is from, but for new messages, there isn't an open tab.
I'm looking for a functionality that allows me to, say, while I'm working in Photoshop and I receive a new message, I can type a single command that switches me to Adium and opens the new message no matter who it's from.
The Applescript that switches me to Adium is easy enough to write, but I can't find the funtionality within Adium to open a newly received message.
I don't mean to be so confusing. I'm new to Adium and I'm trying to make it me-specific, you know?

This might be possible in the future with Growl, when they impliment sticky notifications. The notification will stay on the screen until you click it, then it takes you to the message. At least that's what I've gathered from some of the talk, and I apologize if I'm wrong.

It is implemented in Growl 0.6 (unreleased) and in Adium 0.8 (unreleased) and it's amazingly cool and I can't live without it

He really can't. He brings it up at least once a week.
