"Writing Error" no matter what...

Post by ephraim »

Hello all,

I'm getting this gaim writing error thing every time I try to connect my MSN account, just like some folks were experiencing a few days ago. Except now there aren't any problems with the MSN server, and I can connect just fine with MSN Messenger.

I'd really really prefer to use Adium, for reasons I think everyone here can understand... Does anyone know what might be going on, or at least how I might overcome this issue?

I've tried reinstalling, removing prefs/extras, etc...

Thanks very much,
eph

Just to follow up on my own question a bit...

Does Adium use any ports other than the one you specifiy in the Connection pane of the prefs? My wireless connection here is portblocked all to hell, so if Adium is trying to do something outside of port 80, then that would explain why I can't connect.

Also, I'm using a proxy server (HTTP); not sure if that's complicating anything.

At least the MS client works...

Unfortunately, our proxy support is not very good at this point... particularly HTTP proxies. Do you have the "use HTTP connect method" or similar preference checked in the Connection preferences for your MSN account?
The duck still burns.

Yeah, I've tried it with the "Use HTTP" option on and off. I've also got the port for messenger.hotmail.com set to 80, as that port is known to be open.

Basically anything I do nets me the "writing error"; if I turn off the proxy support, it just times out, of course.
