We don't display two lists, they are just one list together.
When you im someone who is on both your first and second account, before sending the first message there will be a drop down at the top of the message window.

ok, then my next question is.. do i need to individually add all of my old buddies to my new account? Or is there some kind of contact list transfer?

There isn't a form of buddy list transfer, if you want them all there you'll have to add them all to your new account.
My suggestion is to use the official client, export the list on the old one, then sign in the new one and import it. THEN you need to leave the new account signed in overnight

ok thanks. Maybe the list transfer is something to think about for the next patch?

I'd imagine it's been noted as a request. As to it's scheduled time for arrival, check Trac's timeline. (I don't believe it's planned for 1.0)

Why would you need to leave it signed in overnight?

I think I've had better success in doing this than not.

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. I've never left the new account logged in overnight when I do this.
Guess you gotta do what works.
