Suggestions for Google's Summer Of Code

Postby The_Tick » Tue Apr 18, 2006 12:46 am

Hey Folks,

So Adium has been accepted as a mentor project for Google's Summer Of Code. Basically the idea is to pay some students to work on specific projects within an alotted time. The students get paid, the devs that helped them get paid, etc.

Right now we have a list of ideas going here:

http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/SummerOfCode

If you have any suggestions, please post them here.

Out of interest, how many projects will be accepted/worked on through-out SoC? For Adium, I mean.

Mentoring could be 1 dev to two students I think. It's more about pointing the student in the right direction, not baby stepping them.

If we run into this problem I will be so happy and surprised.

Better organization of contacts (although I think this is already planned for future versions)

All/almost all of these are planned for future versions. That's the point :)

You'll need *much* more specific suggestions than that, though.

The server is having problems; we'll have it up again as soon as possible.

Google's guideline is that an organization can mentor as many students as it and its mentors feel comfortable doing.

<ontopic>Maybe some things that are asked but no devs want to make it:
MSN personal messages link
Support for yahoo avatars? link
Different contact lists? link
A contact list widget? (can't find it)
Better documentation (specially for less-known things as contact list creation or applescript)
</ontopic>

MSN personal messages is in progress by authors on the Gaim team; support within Adium is elementary (especially if we go the sane route and treat them as a status message, which is what I'll support when they are supported gaimside). It would not be an appropriate Adium project, though someone might apply to Gaim with a proposal of finishing MSNP11 or whatever the thing is called (though I suspect they'd reject it as 'not new').

Yahoo avatars isn't a bad idea, but mentorship within Gaim would probably be more useful to the student than mentorship within Adium where nobody knows the Yahoo code well.

Documentation projects are explicitly forbidden by Google from being a Summer of Code project.

If this were the military you'd have already been assigned this for bringing it up.

Wanna do it? :D

I'm not saying no to it, but I'm a disaster with CSS and applescript.
If someone would lay out chalk lines, i could "color" them.
I guess I can easily learn about Apple help format and things like that.

I guess that isn't in the scope of SMG, since there's no programming involved? [edit]Now I've read the post above ;-)[/edit]
