Security problem -- MAJOR issue for me

I continue to receive random sexual invites from people not on my buddy list. This pretty much will keep me from using Adium if it continues. Supposedly Adium respects the settings in the official client. This is coming from Yahoo, and I had it originally set to "ignore messages from anyone not on my buddy list." (I also do not have it available on Yahoo for people to see if I am online.) I assure you I do not have anyone asking me if I have a webcam on my buddy list.

I have had to change that setting to ignore specific people, which I am not happy about because it means less security. I am not even confident that is going to work.

I do not post any of my IM names publicly ANYWHERE, but even if I did, I should not be getting messages from people not on my buddy list.

I'm sorry if this is a known issue, I admit I didn't bother to search because I am so annoyed right now about this.

Not a hugely helpful reply I'm afraid, but are you sure? For instance, Yahoo can create a profile page for you at http://profiles.yahoo.com/yourusername - though you probably knew that.

[edit] Woah, someone actually has "yourusername" as their screenname for Yahoo. Hmm.

That's funny.

And yeah, I do have such a profile, but as I said, I don't have the option available to "see if this user is online." But the point is pretty much moot because if Adium respects the official client's security preferences as has been stated here, it shouldn't matter if some weirdo came up with my profile randomly and decided to IM me -- if he is not on my buddy list, he should not be able to. Period. Um...right?

Love your user name, that's one of my favorite songs.

IIRC there was a bug a while ago that resulted in this very behavior (ignore lists not working in Yahoo in libgaim) Since it's not on the list I'd assume it's 'fixed', but obviously is not ;)

Well, for the record I am using version 0.76.

Until the next time this happens, then I'm going back to Proteus. Which I REALLY don't want to do as I much prefer Adium, but I'd rather have spotty service than IM sex spam.

This is only true for AIM.

I see. I must have misread that assertion, which is my fault. Are there plans to implement this in Yahoo? I'm happy to be patient if it's being worked on.

Thanks for the responses, all.

Yes. :)

Correct, but MSN's privacy system works via authorization (while AIM's works via a privacy mode and block/allow list), so I tend to think of it as a separate system. :)

Okay, I'm sorry to keep pushing this, but when is this expected?

I am REALLY tired of getting sexual invites from people. I don't want to stop using Adium but this is totally unacceptable that my privacy settings in YIM are not respected. Can someone please give me an ETA?

I'd also like to see privacy settings supported in Adium. It's one of very, very few areas I'm unhappy with the status quo (and that says a lot, because I'm extremely difficult to please ;) )

Incidentally, is any of this supported in current svn, or is that an unfair question?

In the meantime, you could try putting your sex on your profile as "not specified" or the equivalent? See if that cuts down the unwanted messages, as a temporary measure.

Though, even as a guy I still get a fair few approaches from blokes. Which I find a bit disturbing.

I couldn't care less what gender the "approaches" are from, it's just the fact that they happen that isn't acceptable. This is part of the Internet I just don't want to deal with and I haven't had to until I started using Adium.

I am listed as "gender -- no answer" on my profile, which doesn't seem to make a difference.
