So may webcams, so little app support

I am a bit surprised that there is so little interest in having a multiservice video chat solution with all the new macs coming out with integrated webcams.
Talking to other mac users is sort of useless since the vas majority of the people I know have a PC. Do you think we will be seeing interesting developments from any of the open source programs like adium? Or will the solution come from Microsoft or Apple?
(note: Mercury messenger is lame so it doesn't count)

Seeing as we use libgaim, means that we rely on it. Which means that if they don't have it, we don't have it. Atleast at the moment.
It would be nice if Jabber could start developing a video solution, maybe we'll see it from Google ? I'd bet it could be a good feature. But I guess that people won't change from what ever service they are using to it. As their friends are on it and so on.

I think the main thing is their isn't a dev with a lot of audio video development experience, so they are leaving it to someone (gaim) who have been working with it for a while.

If you want to fix this situation, find someone who wants to work on the a/v support in Adium. Libgaim is not going to be the end all for this, as we're moving to joscar for aim and we would still have to hook up to quicktime.
This all said, there is usually a huge fee associated with folks with this kind of expertise. Those folks generally do not work on OSS projects.

I love that sarcasm and 'statistics' can be used as whip to spur others on in doing what someone wants.
The only 'player' to get it "right" has been Apple, and last I checked they manufactured the entire stack - hardware, camera, operating system, multimedia platform, and chat application.
Last I checked, they had several hundred engineers with significant salaries and backgrounds that work on the above. As Tick said, feel free to convince them to donate their time and knowledge to this or any project enabling A/V. You'll find a quick "conflict of interest" would arise.

Also, nobody has donated isights to the adium project, most of us don't have them.

I will not admit to owning 2 at this point (1 free standing and 1 integrated) for fear of being volunteered
That said, even the addition of iSights 4 all (tm) wouldn't make a heap of difference, but sure would be fun.
The nature of the beast is that it's complex, hard, and requires deep knowledge and expanses of time, access to great resources, and when all else fails, the muscle to make alliances where needed.

What I do is send my contacts a framed photograph of my handsome face so they can bask in my glory whilst we chat

Just my thoughts...
I wouldn't be shocked to see Google come out with something that integrates A/V with their GTalk and make it open so that it can be used with things such as Adium.
I don't think Apple will be doing anything like that any time soon, but it would be pretty sweet....

Yes, the official client has voice chat.
For PCs.

Sorry I was thinking video, not voice.
