weird OTR + AIM issue with 0.89.1

I seem to be having a problem with just aim with adium and otr.
When I get a message from a friend I get a bunch of these error messages:
Error setting up private conversation: Malformed message received
and then this:
The last action you attempted could not be performed because you are over the rate limit. Please wait 10 seconds and try again.
I have been able to successfully encrypt with icq and yahoo. I have also been able to encrypt getting an IM from an AIM client to my icq uin.
Initially my otr.fingerprints file was not created so I did a touch on the cli, and verified the permissions are correct. Once I did that I received the key (which is verified because my friends and collegues share our keys via other ways as well). He also received my new key.
I'm on a macbook pro, using adium 0.89.1. Yesterday I was using my old power book on adium 0.82 with no problems.
I am also able to send my friend encrypted messages and he can read them with no otr errors coming up. It seems to happen when I receive these messages. The person I am testing with is also on an intel mac using adium 0.89.1
Any idea how I can go about fixing this?
