Contact Types limited?

I just began using Adium the other day and I really like it, but why am I limited to only AIM, .Mac and ICQ in the Contact Type when I add a new contact? I really need to add an MSN user to my contacts but don't have the option.

Also, how does one rename Groups?

To add an MSN user you need to have an MSN account set up in Adium. In .7x, IIRC, there's an Accounts tab in the preferences.

Thanks, that worked.

Now, can you rename Groups?

You can right-click on the groups and assign them an alias like you would a contact.

The names will actually stay, but within Adium, the group will have that new name

Heh, there's some group-renaming code in source. It's been there for ages, because it basically trashes your contact list when you use it. One of these days, we'll get it working! Until then, you can alias groups (as above), or rename in the official client.

To be fair to that code, it does work but has the potential to trash the group being renamed on failure (Since it's doing the ever popular delete-all-the-contacts-then-re-add-them-to-the-new-group-and-pray-it-works strategy), which is why it's currently disabled. :)

The OP's question actually comes up a lot.. does anyone have any ideas on what we could do to make this more clear?

Which OP question?

The first one :P I get a lot of emails to support from people who want to add AIM or MSN or Yahoo buddies but the option isn't provided because they haven't added an account on those services.

How about this: Have the options there but marked in some way (greyed out, maybe?) and have them open the account creation window if they're picked.

Won't work since Greying Out makes the menu item unselectable

You can always though keep it normal, and it'll open the Account pane as you said

How about a tooltip which appears to explain it if you hold option while hovering over the popUp menu?

I guess this seems like a really obvious situation -- if you don't HAVE an MSN account, of course you can't add anything to it! :P

On the other hand, I think it's legitamite to think about adding a contact when you DO have an account added, but not signed on. There's always the big-effort-tricky-work solution, that is to allow adding to an offline account and queue up the changes for next time it signs on. But there are a LOT of issues there.

Alternately, include all accounts in the menu, and when the "Add" button gets clicked, ask the user in a sheet: "You must be signed on to <account> to add this contact." with buttons "sign on and add" or "cancel" (which returns you to the Add Contact window).

Alter-alternately, when a disconnected account is chosen, grey out all fields or disable the "add" button and show a label: "You must sign on this account to add a contact" with perhaps a "Sign on" button.

Thoughts?

the former :D

Maybe a "SIGN ON THAT SCREENNAME DAM IT!" dialog!

freakman will like that
