I honestly don't believe it will stay niche once it is out of beta and MySpace starts promoting it heavily. MySpace has a massive user base and a lot of them are really into it. Their IM service is going to integrate into it so switching for a lot of them will be a no brainer, especially since you already have all your friends in your contact list(well not by deault but its just a few clicks to import everyone).

I'm fairly certain most of my friends will switch, in fact a few of them are already using it. And I've already had to explain to a couple of people I couldn't chat with them because I couldn't use the program. I'm not too worried since MySpace will probably release a Mac client eventually; however, I'd much rather use Adium than something they put out.

I think this would be very useful, given Myspace's large user base.

I heard the rumour that the MySpaceIM protocol is a modified form of Jabber (a la GoogleTalk)...is this true?

Did a quick Google. Some say etheral calls it the MSN protocol (Apparently it uses the same port among things). And then someone said it was rumored to use http://www.sonork.com/.

One observation is that the messenger client connections to userplane servers. Their connection with myspace is confirmed in this article:

The only thing that bothers me is that a connection seems to remain present (established) to 01.presence.userplane.com, even once I have quit the client. This is by using netstat to look at the connections. I also notice that port 1863 is being used for the communications.

You could use http://analyzer.polito.it/ to see what is happening.

I basic analyis shows that the each message made up of fields separated by back slashes and include both the field name and its value. One which I extracted

I'm writing a small LSP to sniff mySpaceIM traffic. The first couple of message come through on port 1863 as expected, and in plaintext, as expected.

However, after a few mins, I loose any more incoming messages, I see bits of encrypted type information. but would that make sense ? plaintext at the start and then switch to encrypted after connection ?...

seem very weird. Anyone have any ideas on this ?

This guy link pretends to have been contacted by the Myspace product manager.
It might be believable since the guy pretends to be working for Fox, and MySpace is part of Fox...
You might try to contact him to get in touch with the Myspace IM ppl?

Erm, there's no pretending about my working for FOX or having been contacted by the MSIM PM. Both are decidedly true.

It seems that AOL bought out Userplane, the provider of Myspace's IM, round about the time this thread was last active:

They claim they're aiming for interoperability. Perhaps it's already there, I'm clueless, and that's why this thread has been idle?

Checking out Userplane's site, digging into the plugins they provide for Drupal, it looks like their product is basically a black box web service.

I'm not sure folks who've implemented it would be of much use, rather any protocol info would need to come from Userplane.

Having said that, a buddy of mine who works at another social community (http://zaadz.com/about) told me today that their IM is also provided by Userplane.

Do the devs here think talking to someone who's implemented it would help?

If so, I can try kicking them in the shins and getting one of them to pop over here. They're all Linux and OSX heads, so they'd be sympathetic to the cause, if they're not contractually bound to silence.

Yeah, when will Adium be compatible with MySpace IM Accounts???
