What ever happened to Proteus?

Postby jdang » Tue Aug 15, 2006 4:27 pm

Does anyone know what happened to proteus? Has it been keeping up with things. I remember hearing about it alot during the time adium was just a fledgling, but it has seemed to disappear as of recently. What's the deal?

Yeah i think it kind of fell off the table when their lead dev left to work on something else.

I don't think it's dead, though, they just released a beta.

IIRC the lead (original) developer went to work for Apple and sold Proteus, at which point the new owners decided to give it away for free, but have obviously dramatically reduced the amount of effort they pore into it.

that sounds about right. if you look at the new tab interface for iChat you can tell who helped out there.

The running long running story starts when Proteus was sold to defaultware from there on proteus has been heading down, down down which personally I think is a shame. At the moment the forums are down and everything is looking dead. I think that were see it rise from the ashes as an Open Source project at some point but who knows when. They would have to be some busy developers to ever get proteus to caught up with adium. Heres hoping we hear something soon.

Yeah, I remember when it was a hot race between adium and proteus. Enough to warrant quickly escalating debates (and prompt intervention by the moderators) on the forums. I just went to the site and it's like....dead. What a shame. I mean, they even have a broken link for their beta download! What the....

  1. Justin, the creator, was offered a job at Apple (specifically on iChat), so he had to sell the project to...
  2. Defaultware. They became secretive and production nearly ground to a fault.
  3. Defaultware announced that Proteus 5 was being worked on in a major way, the next gen version of Proteus that would be more sophisticated and advanced than Adium 1.0
  4. For a year, we were given virtually nothing. We were told that the core was being re-written.
  5. Eventually, people got narked.
  6. A few months back, Defaultware announced that Proteus was to become open source under a BSD licence.
  7. A little while after, Defaultware announced that it was surrendering the code and all development to developer.
  8. To date, the Proteus code is yet to have been made available.
  9. The developers claim that they are switching servers; this has been going on for weeks.

Basically, as far as I can see, it's dead. It may be resuscitated in the future, but as of this moment, it's doing the backstroke.

They said this would be the new site. So it's not totally dead I guess.

I have recieved some emails that the site will be up soon. Soon, can be questioned though. My guess is that it will be up in a few weeks, or a month.

Above is a proof of concept.

It's a shame what happened to Proteus after Justin left.

The new developers just did not care. Not one release was on time (in fact they were months late), most bugs would be ignored, etc. All I heard from them was excuse after excuse, and personally I don't buy any of it - even if you are extremely busy it doesn't take more then a few minutes to jump on the forums and update your users (a lot of them PAYING CUSTOMERS) of the situation.

The Proteus forums and site are down now, and probably will be for months. Now if it's true that they are open sourcing it thats good news but I don't think many people will want to contribute to it because its so far behind Adium now (aside from the user interface - but its far easier to fix the UI in Adium then to add all the missing features to Proteus).

Let's not have this turn into a Proteus dissing thread. The original question has been adequately answered, let the topic die.

I never get this comment, I much prefer the Adium ui over the Proteus ui.

Just to note, he started working under QA at the ichat development. If he hasn't been promoted since.
