Request: Status icons as a badge on service icons/ password

Post by carlj7 »

I was playing with GAIM today, since I want to change my AIM password. (Incidentally, even though I told GAIM to change it, it didn't change. Wonder why…) Anyhow, I noticed that the way GAIM does its status/service badges is different from Adium, and sorta cool. They have the status icons as badges on top of service icons. This seems like a pretty good way to do this. Whenever I think about doing status as a badge in Adium, I always end up not doing it, since the status badge covers up most of my friends' buddy icons. It would be better if I had more control over what's a badge of what.

So, for example, I might have the service icon at 32x32 with a 16x16 badge of that user's buddy icon on the left and their status on the right. Or maybe I could do it the GAIM way and have the service icon badged by the status icon on the left and the buddy icon on the right. OR I could have the buddy icon on the left and the status icon on the right with a badge for the service on top of it.

Also, I think we all talked about the need to give people using mobile IM a specialized status badge a while back. That would be cool.

And finally, I'd like to be able to change my password in Adium, so that I don't have to launch GAIM (or worse AIM!) every once in a while to do that.

can't you change your password through some web interface run by AOL? i haven't done it personally, but i think that would make sense somehow...

I don't know if there's a way to change your password on the web or not. I tried AIM Express, but never saw an option for it.

Here's a screenshot of the GAIM style icons:

Notice how the service icon for AIM looks different went you're idle and away.

First of all, Adium != Gaim.

Second, Gaim, not GAIM, because of copyright issues.

And finally, this is up to the developers. You could always just have a note icon as the status icon and set the contact list to "Badge" status icons, or make the status icons like that yourslef (but they'll still have that service icon) and not display the service icon…
