On a preliminary search I get the sense that this not possible, but is there any way to set Adium to use ONLY Growl notifications to indicate a message has arrived?
To me the beauty of Growl is that it provides an unobtrusive notification, and then goes away. There's no reason this notification should be combined with a chat window that just sits there until you address it.
It's the root of two annoyances: 1, if I'm doing something else, I've got an extra window in the background to distract me, and I see the message twice (once in Growl, once in the chat window) 2, if I get a message when I'm away, I come back to a long chat window that has every single indication of when my buddy went away, came back, had lunch, went offline, came back online, etc.
And yes, I do realize I can disable the window when the app is unfocused, but that feature gets annoying when I actually DO want to chat.
The sort of behavior I want on a new message is a Growl window combined with the little chat icon over my buddy's status icon. Seems simple, right?
Thanks for this opportunity to rant/request a much-needed feature.
Disable popup on incoming message?
It's not simple.
You're also not understanding the design of interaction between Growl and other applications, or rather, how it was intended.
Basically, notifications are transient. How does Adium know you've seen any of these unless you click them, which I'm assuming you are not.
So really you're looking for something else, behavior like the old icq clients had. Which is something we've had requested before but that nobody has had the inclination to work on. The Growl notifications are just a part of the request, but it's not the basic request.
It's probably something we won't be doing.

I only mentioned Growl because it was the one part of the notification process I didn't find obtrusive. But for discussion's sake, let's say I haven't installed Growl...
Is it overly complicated to have Adium recieve a message *but not show it*? Or instantly minimize to the dock? I just don't want to see it while I'm doing something else, and I don't want a chat window scrolling by in full view while I'm not even at my computer.
I forget what the old ICQ was like, but I'm coming from Trillian, which can be set to display only a notification in the Windows tray and an icon over the person's name in the buddy list. In Adium, it would be nice to have a small icon that shows up in the Menu Bar and over the person's name, *without popping up the actual chat window*. The chat window could be revealed by double-clicking the person's name.
I hope this is more clear.

Here's another thread that I think more simply explains what I'm looking for, and proves I'm not the only one:

Because the key words for this question are kind of generic, I can't tell if this is actually in the Trac or not. But it's the sort of functionality that's part of a lot of IM clients and I think a lot of us would appreciate it.
