Anyway, the actual email notification response: Adium provides all email notification capabilities which the official instant messaging protocol provides. This means that Yahoo mail and MSN-with-Hotmail accounts have mail notification, as the protocol provides for that. This also means that AIM accounts using an AOL screen name have mail notification.

Adium does not and will not implement IMAP or POP3 mail checking; we believe that such functionality is well served by existing solutions such as Apple's Mail.app in a way in which Adium would not be able to exceed.

regarding the "official clients" problem... why not make Adium a network unto itself? c'mon, it would be fun! that way there's no problem with unexpected protocol changes, no chance of nudges or buzzes, easy to integrate fun features into our own protocol and all that. sorta. plus we'd only be able to talk to a few (hundred?) thousand other people, making Adium kinda like an exclusive club. with golf. we have to have golf. and little finger snacks. and gloves.

Hi,
I like how the email notification system works, but I have one question:

I want to use Mail.app instead of the web-mail, when I click the "Open Mail"-button. I solved this by adding this applescript to the "New email notification"-event:

Code: Select all

tell me to activate
beep
display dialog "You have new mail." buttons {"Close", "Open Mail"} default button 2
if button returned of the result is "Open Mail" then
	tell application "Mail"
		activate
		check for new mail
	end tell
end if

That works fine except that the default notification pops up too, which annoys me. Does anyone know how I get rid of this?

I've been saying that in Adium .80+, there shouldn't be a pop up for mail unless it's added as an event, but so far the devs haven't expressed interest in adding the feature.

Man, one-a-these-days, I oughta get around to learnin' Cocoa/Objective-C…

Crazy, I go home for a couple of days and come back to find a huge response to some old post. I don't know how i managed to miss it back when most of it happened. Ah ok, just checked the dates it was over my birthday. Still feel pretty daft

Actually i was referring to the users, that if you remove the email support, new users to adium would be ignorant in that they would lack knowledge of adium's email features. I wouldn't have suggested improvements if the feature was non-existent, i never expected adium, as a chat client, to support email notifications, but it does, and the development of adium seems to be in a perfective manor, this feature is not perfect, so i was merely suggesting improvements. Didn't mean to call you ignorant, sorry.

I disagree. It's perfectly natural to compare adium to the official clients. People make comparisons all the time, it's how you know something is really good or really bad. If Adium were the only im client ever made, then the way it was made would have been a lot different.

I wasn't trying to say that adium should not be compared to the official clients, just that it's a shame that adium is constantly compared to the official clients and that it's a shame that so many users concentrate on encouraging the implementation of features from the official clients instead of suggesting and developing unique features, but that adium manages to implement these features in a unique "birdy" (that one won't be in the dictionary either) way. I think I'd been recently reading lots of comments asking for the implementation of official features, and then realised I'd just done the same.

What makes you think that it doesn't grow freely? Ya, we do listen to users, but that doesn't mean that we implement everything brought up.

Okay I should have said completely freely. I realise adium does have many unique features, and is not just a alternative version of the official clients, but you have to admit, that adium is forced to grow somewhat in the direction of the official clients, even if only a very very small amount

In regards to your concern here, it would be idiotic for us to not compare adium in some ways to official clients.

Yeah sorry "ornithising" can not be found in standard dictionaries. I blame my course, which is full of nonsense words which aren't available in standard dictionaries. At least it shows I've learnt something.

Again, with regards to my concern, I'd like to stress the word constantly. I agree it would be idiotic to make no comparisons. I didn't intend to cause offence or to call anybody ignorant in an offensive manor at all, and i apologise for the offence i have caused.

Well either way, it's quite funny that the user posting is trying to push us in the direction he/she wants instead of trying to let Adium grow freely of it's own accord, and then says the following:

Yeah originally i was trying to push you the direction i wanted, but then I agreed with you and dchoby98 - that adium's not an email app - that's what mail etc is for, adium is only an IM app... and by removing the feature, you'd stop people from suggesting improvements to it, and they couldn't rudely suggest you were being half assed about it.

The real beef (outstanding), for me, is that hotmail won't let mail.app support its free accounts, but the answer is... don't use hotmail, its not a requirement of instant messaging, Microsoft only tie them all together to make more money. I don't know about the other protocols, does mail support yahoo email? i don't use my yahoo email account much, and I don't think I got an AOL account with my AIM id.

So yeah I still think it would be "cool" to expand on the email front, but not at the expense of the IM front, it's unnecessary and not in adium's design spec.

Totally agree with you're reasoning, but both msn and yahoo provide the capability for you to check your email...whenever by simply clicking on a link or button, as in the official clients, and which is the functionality i was originally requesting, and some users probably would still find useful, but, and lets all say it together now: "adium's not an email client!"
