I'm at school now..... and just tried logging in with Miranda (off my USB key) and MSN Messenger 7.0 (off the local harddrive).
Both give errors and are unable to logon. I don't see how the contact list data got corruped but it certianly seems like that is the problem.
Has anyone figured a way around this? There doesn't seem to be any official Microsoft info on this.... and that SUCKS. I kind of rely on MSN Messenger for communication in a lot of instances.....
EDIT: I have filed a support ticket with Microsoft. We'll see what they have to say.

Keep us posted. From all indications, it is indeed a problem serverside.. though it might be a "feature" serverside which is causing problems for certain clients.
someone told me that all MSN accounts are on one of two servers, which is why when something goes wrong (with one of them) its so catastrophic to MSN users... stoopid microsoft. never heard of fail-over or clustering, clearly...
It seems that I can now sign in with Microsoft Messenger for Mac and with Adium.
I don't know if Microsoft pulled their thumbs out or if signing in with WLM helped, but I'm back on the Microsoft/MSN/.NET/Windows/Windows Live Messenger network.
