random crashes

since a couple of days i'm experiencing trouble with adium.

The program just stops and shows the crashreporter. The biggest problem is that i haven't discovered any pattern yet. To me the crashes seem completly random with a time interval between 2 or 3 seconds and 2-3 minutes.

I have reinstalled (the latest version of) the program, runned it with a clean preference folder and created a fresh user account in macOSX. But nothing seems to help.

Anyone knows the problem/a solution? tyvm

Disable the msn account and restart adium. See if the crashes go away.

I runned adium without any IM-accounts without any problems. Then I added a new (just created) msn account, again without any problems. I added some friends to the new account which also wasn't a problem.

But as soon as I added my old account to adium. It started to crash again after a couple of seconds.

so, something seems wrong with my msn-account what causes adium to crash. Anyone who know's what I can do against this?

Are you reporting the crashes with the crash report?

yes, i did, with most of them.... the last two were send yesterday. in total i send 50 ofthem i guess....

Further i noticed some adium logfiles in my trash which refer to an EXC_BAD_ACCESS exception.

Code: Select all

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x000001b1

I thought it would be best to ammend to a crash report thread instead of creating a new one...

I seem to only have crashes when I attempt to send IMs. I click the my buddy's name, and the chat window opens, about 2 seconds later (or less) Adium crashes.

I have sent two Crash reports (just this evening), and have sent several in past weeks, Adium has worked alright for me for the past few days, (I also started a clean slate after I had sent several crash reports a few weeks ago). This seemed to help for a few days, but now the problem seems to be back.

Adium seems stable so long as I don't try to send IM's.

I'm using OSX 10.4.8 on my 2GHz Intel Macbook with 1GB RAM
Adium version 0.89.1

I use Aduim mainly with my AIM account, but also have Google Talk, and MSN accounts stored, but not often active.

Did I read correctly that using the beta version would help with bugs? I'll try that for the time being.

I hope this helps, and I hope I can get some insight on what's up.

If you can give me the email address or IM screen name you used when filing the crash report I can look it up in our database.

Ok, the crash is at http://www.visualdistortion.org/crash/v ... ash=221711 for any other developers reading the thread. It's that ridiculous no-backtrace insert nil crash.
Katty9203: I really don't remember if we've fixed that one yet for 1.0, but it's worth a try.

A couple people reporting a crash looking like that found that it didn't occur with the same Adium 2.0 folder on a new user account. This makes me suspect corruption from some other application's preferences file in ~/Library/Preferences or from some other running application, haxie, or InputManager. More details than that, I don't have.

Thanks for the speedy reply, and I think you all are doing a great job. I'll check back in on this tomorrow.
