Adium seems to have run out of ram at once point, and screwed everything up. I could not log in or anything. I quit normally, restart, and tried again.

It was fine, so I thought, until I noticed all the meta tags were scrambled, giving the wrong people their meta tags.

I tried deleting the preferences, bt the meta tags did not reset... somehow, they, and some groupings of contacts, retained.

I'm not asking for a quick-fix, but I would like to clear them all so I can try again.

Could someone assist?

move your Home/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0 directory somewhere else, like the desktop. Do you have the same problem then?
