open links in background/external browser

Hi everybody!

I want to start by saying how much I love Vienna. I just downloaded it because Apple Mail lost its RSS functionality in Mountain Lion, but now I wish I had found it earlier. Good work!
I started with 2.6, as it's the stable release, but mostly because of fullscreen mode switched to the beta yesterday.

It seems to me that when "open links in external browser" is selected (which I prefer) the "open links in background" option does nothing. Links always open in the background, wether it's selected or not. am I missing something or is there a bug? It works as expected in 2.6.

Also a feature proposition: Would it be possible to have article titles wrap to the next line in "compact" view, so we can read the whole title by sacrificing a little bit of height and consequently number of articles that can be shown at once?

I am running Version 3.0b.2821 on OS X 10.8.2 (12C2034)

Again, thank you all,
ht
(from Vienna, the city)

I wasn't able to reproduce your problem...

May be your preferences file is corrupted ? Try trashing ~/Library/Preferences/uk.co.opencommunity.vienna2.plist

thank you!

unfortunately it didn't work for me.
I just re-enabled the checkbox (so deleting DID have an effect) but still the same behaviour.
now it's also without "external browser" enabled, the "open links in background" checkbox seems to have no effect whatsoever on my machine (rather, it's working as enabled no matter what)

any more ideas?
thanks,
ht

I have the same: the checkbox has no effect.
I cannot get Vienna to open links in Safari, or in the foreground of the Vienna browser.
No matter what setting in the preferences.
I tried trashing the prefs which has no effect

I'm on Version 3.0b.2821

just wanted to say that the above mentioned behaviour continues in the new beta 8 release.

are there any logs/prefs I could provide to investigate the source of the problem as it doesn't seem to affect everybody?

greetings,
ht

UPDATE (actually not the right way to do it, see update 2):
So, I just figured I'll have a look at the preferences file myself.
Since I couldn't find a key for the background behaviour I just created one (OpenLinksInBackground, boolean) set it to "NO" and voila: It works now.
Checking or unchecking the box in Vienna's preferences still has no effect whatsoever, [so it seems to me there is a problem writing that setting from inside the application, maybe someone could look into it. (the other options, at least the ones I tried, do affect the prefs file as well as the app's behaviour)] (see real reason below).

thanks for this great application,
ht

UPDATE 2:
Now I found out that the source of the problem was actually a bad localization. In German the checkbox for automatic updates was labelled "Links im Hintergrund öffnen" (open links in background), the correct checkbox was one below (third from above) There are some other translation errors in the preferences as well. As I am new to open source software would someone provide me with instructions (or a link to such) how to provide a new translation, as I would be happy to do it if it doesn't require programming skills.

Thanks for investigating this !

If you have Xcode installed, get the source from github, and in this case, have a look at lproj/de.lproj/GeneralPreferences.nib and lproj/de.lproj/GeneralPreferences.strings
Use Xcode's menu item "View -> Utilities -> Show Connections Inspector" to be sure.

You probably aren't familiar with Github. Just upload here a zip file of the files you modified, and I'll include them in the next Beta.

PS : I'd suggest you also have a look at the lproj/de.lproj/Vienna Help files. They are probably a bit outdated.

Ok, I tried this.

I changed everything I could, but the drop down menus for "move to trash" and "default RSS reader" didn't have any items to change and I am not sure how to create them, I'll leave that to more experienced coders. (move to trash should say: Nie; nach einem Tag; nach zwei Tagen; nach einer Woche; nach zwei Wochen; nach einem Monat)
I also changed the (different and not used?, I have no idea how this works) translations in the strings file so they are consistent with the nib.

I also don't understand what the connections inspector tells me.

I am sorry but I don't understand XCode quite yet, hope this helps anyway,
ht

fxr, can you get the just uploaded Beta 9 and check if the translations are OK now ?

The checkboxes are labeled correctly now, but the spacing isn't quite right (too much between the 3rd and the 4th checkbox)
Strangely you seem to have only used some of my new translations and kept others the old way, not that it hurts my pride, I just think my suggestions were more in line with "standard" descriptions in german localizations. Also "move to trash" should read "Lege Elemente in den Papierkorb" not "Leere...".

Don't hesitate to tell me how I can help further!

ht

I limited my changes to the strict minimum, because I was afraid of doing more harm than good...

Now, feel free do download the amended version, and change accordingly...

I was not sure what you mean:
the last version that is available on github (beta9) is precisely the one I commented on.
the changes I suggest are all included in the files I uploaded in my previous post.

thank you and everyone who develops Vienna!
I will be available to help in the future for German localization, but maybe sometimes not immediately.
(everyone may point out german localization issues to me via pm if they want too)

greetings,
ht
