Poll : what is your preferred theme for Vienna ?

Postby barijaona » Wed Mar 06, 2013 4:08 am

We are close to releasing Vienna 3.

You might have noticed that Vienna supports visual themes for rendering articles. There are a few included in the default install, but you can find others here or here.

So the question is : which styles are your preferred ones ? and on the opposite side, do you think we could safely remove a few of them from the default install ?

I've been digging around a lot in the styles directory, familiarizing myself with what's included with Vienna "out of the box," and what the awesome people in the open source community have been hacking together.

Most if not all of the existing Vienna reader styles should be removed by default. People will always want to customize, hack, and explore new things, and that is why Vienna is open and people can always install whatever styles they make themselves or find within the community.

But as far as the styles that are built in to Vienna when a new user downloads it--there should be a handful, no more than a half dozen, that give as much breadth and flavor as possible. They aim of all of the styles should be for maximum readability and/or efficiency of display.

I think there should be at least two (2) serif styles (a light and a dark), two (2) sans serif styles (light and dark), and one "compact" style. An exemption or two could be made (I'd argue for one sepia/lower-contrast option and one "fun" option).

I've made a couple suggestions. I also believe Carles Bellver's Minimalista themes are great.

As for most (not all) of the current styles, many of them are based on HTML tables and old CSS... They should perhaps be left behind...

I believe the "pre-installed" list should be as follows:

    Current Default/Tyger Graphite
    Tyger
    Minimalista Sans
    Minimalista Serif
    Papes
    Perlucida
    Serifim Light
    Serifim Dark
    Xcast

I'd like to see Xcast in blue!

Agreed. I have added a few technical improvements to it in my fork.

Afterthought : I think the Feedlight styles should be kept/improved, because many people appreciate its compactness.

Absolutely. It's the only one I use although I've modified it over time. It's also the only one that I know of that has ad blocking built into the CSS, I've updated that as well.

No, I actually keep two versions of Feedlight. One with Verdana for articles and one with Palatino but I'd have to check to see if the Palatino one is up to date as I seldom use it.

I also have a slightly modified version of Feedlight (Aqua) with a serif font (Hoefler Text, in my case), which is the only theme I use...
