Google Reader is going to be shut down in July. When this happens, what's going to happen to the feeds synced from my Google account?

I started using Vienna today for this reason and synching with Reader and then unchecking the option left the feeds intact, presumably unsynched, but all the feed labels are prefixed with [G].

Not having a quick way to remove that prefix is pretty much the only complaint I have

Well, that is fantastic. So much work from the dev team for nothing.

Hello.

- Quit Vienna
- Launch Terminal
- go to Vienna folder by typing: cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/Vienna
- =========MAKE A BACKUP OF messages.db=========: cp messages.db messages.backup
- launch the sqlite cli: sqlite messages.db (or sqlite3 messages.db)
- type: UPDATE folders SET foldername=substr(foldername,4) WHERE substr(foldername,1,3) = '[G]';
- type: .q
- Relaunch Vienna

This ==should== work. I don't use Google reader and so I don't have the data to test the commands.

Not as good, I am afraid… Google Reader had become an ecosystem, with a large choice of applications for different kind of devices.

The first alternative I am thinking of is Feedly.They are trying to make the transition easier. Clever move.

In this August post, I wrote :

consider Netvibes, NewsBlur, GoodNoows and the likes. Netvibes has an API set, but I don't know if many apps use it, and I haven't read their privacy policy. zenCanCan might be another interesting alternative, because the software is opensource, so anyone competent enough could host it anywhere and get rid of privacy concerns. Is there a "market" for this ? I let you judge by yourself...

The best solution to get rid of Google :

- Use "File->Export Subscriptions" ; select both options "Export all subscriptions" and "Preserve group folders in exported file"
- Quit Vienna
- Delete (or, better, rename) the ~/Library/Application Support/Vienna/messages.db file
- Relaunch Vienna
- Delete the default subscriptions
- Use "File->Import Subscriptions", and point to the file saved at the first step.

Along similar lines, with Google Reader going away, how might one sync Vienna with IOS devices in the future?

I hope many apps will follow this path.

This is kind of a feature request: Tiny Tiny RSS is an online feedreader. It provides a JSON API, could a future Version of Vienna support it?

+1 for Tiny Tiny RSS support!

Before Google Reader I use Tiny Tiny RSS for years and switched to Google Reader because of better client support for iOS. And use Vienna on the Mac, because it reminds me to the three-pane-view like TT-RSS. But Vienna is a lot better than TT-RSS in a browser.

It would be nice to add Tiny Tiny RSS API. Thank you very much

iCloud is not cross platform ; its datas aren't even sharable with apps developed by separate firms/people.
iCloud is good at securing datas (sandboxing), but is not designed for sharing them.

It seems there aren't so many options for users of TT-RSS with iOS and Android.
Just a single Androïd client, and for iOS, this webapp seems the only viable situation.

Did someone here test these ? Were you satisfied ? Or did I miss interesting alternatives ?

On a iPad4 (and hence it should on Retina iPads) with a WLAN connection, the normal web interface is good enough in my opinion, at least in "Combined View". Only tested the web app on my desktop, it looks good enough there, but I don't have a iPhone to test it.

The Android app looks OK on my phone (Android 4.0.4), and the TT-RSS developer considers it as a reference implementation for the use of the external API.

Now, if there was a desktop application supporting it…

I setup a personal copy of Tiny Tiny RSS for testing, and tested with an iPad (with "digest" plugin activated) and an iPhone (the above-mentioned ttrss-mobile).

I like it, but I wouldn't say (yet ?) that I love it. It is surely a very capable product, but it's lacking a "best for doing something special" appeal for me.
I'll wait a few upgrades to check if the benefits of maintaining it up are worth the effort.

Alas, the source is GPL licensed, while Vienna is under an Apache license. Their are major incompatibilities between these licenses ; unless the TT-RSS developers agree unanimously on relaxing their position (doubtful), it's too risky looking at their code : we have to start from scratch.
