Moving to Vienna from Google Reader

Hello!

I recently switched to Vienna from Google Reader and I wanted to give some tips on how to ease the conversion.

First off, a big thanks to the developers for creating this software!

Here's what I did to approximate the Reader style that I'm used to.

-- Import Subscriptions

Vienna has a "Sync with Google Reader" option but I wasn't sure what would happen once Reader shut down so I imported them manually into Vienna.

To get your subscriptions into Vienna:

1. Export them from Google Reader via Google's Takeout service
  1. Go to https://www.google.com/takeout
  2. Click "Choose Services"
  3. Click "Reader"
  4. Click Create Archive
  5. Wait for archiving to complete
  6. Click "Download"
2. Unzip the archive by double-clicking it

3. Import into Vienna
  1. Click File -> Import Subscriptions
  2. Open your Takeout folder
  3. Select "Reader -> subscriptions.xml"
  4. Click "Open"
-- Google Reader style Layout

Currently the default Vienna layout is the "Report" style where, after clicking a feed on the left, Vienna will display a list of items in the top right and only display the item once the User clicks one.

Happily, Vienna already has Google Reader-style layouts built in:

1. Click View -> Layout -> Unified

This approximates how Google Reader displays items, where clicking a feed on the left displays all items on the right in one view.

-- Differences

* "Read" vs "Un-read" status

Currently Vienna does not automatically mark the items as read when they are displayed.
From comments in the "Unified Layout" thread in this forum, I believe this is being developed.

Press "s" to mark all items in the feed as read.

* Internal Browser vs External

For those that prefer using an External Browser to open links,
  1. Click "Vienna -> Preferences"
  2. Check the "Open links in external browser" option
I have Firefox set up as my default browser and, for me, clicking a link opens the tab in FF but focus remains in Vienna; FF does not switch to the foreground. Not sure how others feel (or if there's a way to change this) but I prefer this as I like to click several links in Vienna then Command-Tab over to FF when ready to view them all.

Once again, a big, "Thanks!" to the dev's for making such a great product!

Yes, you can change this behavior if you want. There is a "Open new links in background" option in the Preferences. It is checked by default, but you can uncheck it.
