Dear all,
I've started using the Vienna program to get updates on scientific papers from various journals (e.g. Nature, Science, Neuron). This works well: in the RSS list of topics I can double click on an interesting title, and Vienna opens a new tab with a browser window that shows the abstract of the paper. Then, clicking on the pdf link loads the formatted pdf paper directly (I'm at a university with an institution subscription).
What does not work well is printing the pdf. In the print dialog the preview shows only a single page (even if the pdf contains multiple pages), and it has a large border on the left top. This issue does not only occur for printing to a real printer, but also when I click on 'PDF' (in the print window) and select 'save as PDF...'. Finally, I use the 'Papers' application (a program to organize scientific papers) which has a menu option in the 'PDF' option 'save PDF to Papers'; using this option through Vienna yields the same issue.
The Vienna web browser (showing in a tab) looks quite similar to the Safari browser. However if I load the same link in Safari, printing and saving to PDF works fine.
Any ideas how I can print/save to pdf/save to Papers in Vienna and keep the full pdf, rather than only part of the first page with a large border?
Thank you for your consideration,
Nick
browser window: printing in 'raw' form (& to pdf)?
Re: browser window: printing in 'raw' form (& to pdf)?
Does this 'single page PDF' behaviour appear in any way with a normal web browser when you attempt to access the resource without entering the credentials your institution requires to browse the papers?
Re: browser window: printing in 'raw' form (& to pdf)?
Thanks for your suggestion. I don't think it has anything to do with the credentials from my institution. The issue also occurs when I go the BBC news website (through an RSS feed of the BBC), then search for a pdf and open it (by clicking on the link) in the vienna browser tab.Echelon9 wrote:Does this 'single page PDF' behaviour appear in any way with a normal web browser when you attempt to access the resource without entering the credentials your institution requires to browse the papers?
For example, through the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk) I go the search field (top right), search for "pdf", then find an entry ("Bristol Airport 'rat-run' at Barrow Gurney to close for water work", http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-22480385), then click on the pdf link (http://www.bristolwater.co.uk/wp/wp-con ... rawing.pdf) and it shows a two page document in the vienna browser tab. When I print this to a pdf, it only prints the first page of the original page (but the output is two pages because the document is landscape, so the second page contains the right-hand part of the first page of the original). In addition grey lines have been added to the top and left of the output pdf.
Re: browser window: printing in 'raw' form (& to pdf)?
A temporary workaround : install the PDF Browser plugin http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/ , and use the Print button in its own toolbar.
I contribute to Vienna RSS as a developer.
